Griffith, who has recently

Enrolled at Ashland
Ashland A total of 958 are
enrolled at Southern Oregon
college, the first time since
1946 that spring enrollment
has exceeded fall term regis
trations, Dr. Elmo Steven
son, suo president, nas an
nounced. v
The 958 enrolled now com
pares to 931 last fall. There
are 621 men and 337 women
enrolled. The freshman class
is the largest with 310, there
are 250 sophomores, 170 jun
iors and 112 seniors. There
are eight graduate and 69

points out that today many
personj seated quietly in their
car, which perhaps has stop
ped at an intersection, are
injured when some careless
or drunken driver crashes into
them from behind. What hap
pens is that first, as the body
is suddenly moved forward,
the head flies back. The next
second it flies forward. Na
turally, this is rough on the
joints between the bottom of
the skull and, the top of the
spine, and on all the import
ant tissues surrounding this
region. There can be . injury
to one of the disks between
two vertebras, or some dislo
cation between two veretbras,
or a fracture of some part of
a vertebra.
Much can often be learned
from x-ray films made at sev
eral angles. Often, the head is
put in traction and this helps
The person injured is usually
wise not to get into a long
and mentally distressing law
suit, and he is , wise to get
back to work as soon as pos
sible. What with perhaps over-
treatment, much worry, long
hospitalization, the running
up of big bills, and then great
anxiety as to who is going to
Dav them a person with a
somewhat unstable nervous
system can easily slip into a
compensation neurosis that
can wreck him in every way,
and leave him disabled for a
year or two.
I am sure that if I had a
whiplash injury, and in a few
days could get about, perhaps
in a plaster collar, I would go
back to the office and go to
work. If insurance adjusters
could get something out of the
man who nit me, wen ana
good; if not, I would not want
to sue: I would not want to
take chances with the psychic
strain of a lawsuit. This could
make my neck immensely
worse.
As Dr. J. Sloan Berryman,
of Los Angeles has said, be
cause many a patient expects
his physician i.o appear later
for him as an expert witness
in court, he unconsciously ex
aggerates symptoms.
If the first doctor called
says he cannot see where the
patient has suffered much of
an injury, the man is- likely
to get worse. In search, of
more sympathy he goes ' to
another physician and per
haps another, and in the pro
cess, he is likely to get ever,
more anxious and hence ever
more disabled.

Suit Filed in Court
R. D. Lowry, Medford, is
seeking $20,350 in "damages
from Ednamae Hail Hamm,
owner of Casino tavern, Med
ford. Damages include $350 for
loss of earnings, medical serv
ices and X-rays; $10,000 com
pensatory damages, $5,000 ex
emplary and $5,000 punitive
damages.
According to the complaint,
on Dec. 25, 1957, Lowry was
visiting the premises of the
tavern as an employee of Mrs.
Hamm. Another employee,
Amos Shadley, assaulted Low
ry, dragged him from the
premises and pushed him into
the s.treet, Lowry charges in
his complaint.
Extradited Friday
Glenn Eugene Wolter, 21,
Wisconsin, was extradited to
Sheboygen, Wise, Friday,
Chief Criminal Deputy Joe
Walsh has reported.
Wolter was arrested earlier
this week on a warrant charg
ing non-support and signed
by Wisconsin authorities. The
Sheboygen sheriff picked up
Wolter, Walsh said.
