Is Elected to
Mortar Board
Gold Hill Miss Mildred
Gail has been elected to Mor
tar Board, national senior
women's honor society at the
University of Washington,
Seattle.
Miss Gail is one of 16
young women elected from
several hundred juniors to
receive the honor. Election is
based on scholarship, leader
ship, and service.
Those elected to the group
will serve as hostesses at Uni
versity receptions and other
functions on the campus dur
ing their senior year. They
are to set an example for
good conduct and good citi
zenship. The group raises
funds each year for two
' scholarships, one for a sopho
more girl and one for a junior.
Miss Gail is in the Far East
department and is majoring
in the Russian language, with
a minor in French. She will
soon appear in an all
'Trench" three act play, in
which she has a maid's role.
She served for one year as
secretary of the YWCA, and
as hospitality chairman of the
Cosmopolitan club, which
promotes friendship and
Christian understanding be
tween students of all nations

A graduate of Crater High
school with the class of 1955,
she was outstanding in speech
and drama, and patricipated
in debating. She was a mem
ber of Torch Honor society
while at Crater and served
as vice - president of the stu
dent body. She received the
Elks Leadership award.

at the university this sum
mer where she has accepted a
part time position in the

Planned by Court

the Amaranth, will hold a
memorial service at the reg
ular meeting at the Masonic
temple, Thursday, May 15, at
8 p.m. Presiding will be Mrs.
Marshall Day, royal matron,
and Fred Purdin, royal pa
tron. The service will be held
for members who have died
this past year.
Following the meeting re
freshments will be served,
with Mrs. Olaf Skoog as chairman.

temple, Thursday, May 15, at
6:30 p.m. for a potluck dinner.

The Gail's other daughter,
Miss Grace Gail, is a fresh
man at Oregon State. Their
son, Donald, is a fifth grade
student in the Hanby school.

Rose Show Chairman Urges
Disbudding of Hybrids Now
All persons intending to
enter roses in the annual Med
Eord -Rose Show, to be held
at the Red Cross building
Monday, June 2, are urged by
Mrs. Ronald Axtell, general
chairman of the event, to be
gin disbudding their hybrid
tea roses in preparation for
exhibiting in the show. Speci
men exhibition blooms must
have been grown disbudded,
she states, and evidences of
late disbudding -will be penal
ized' by the judges. However,
side buds are permitted on
blooms of single roses, climb
ers, polyanthas, floribundas
and grandiflora roses.
Exhibitors are also advised
to fertilize their roses now so
that they will be in top shape
and producing, in quality and
quantity, exhibition blooms
for the show.
AH rose enthusiasts who
grow "old roses" (intorduced
prior to 1910) are invited to
exhibit in the "Old Rose" di
vision of the show. Section A
of this division is a new
exhibit this year. Class 1 of
this section consists of three
stems of Moss roses; Class 2,
three stems of Rugosa or Ru
gosa Hybrids (must be
named); and Class 3, three
stems of old fashioned roses
(i.e., Hermosa, La Reine Vic
toria, Duchess de Brabant,
etc.)
Section B of this division
"Old Rose Bouquet" was a
feature of last years rose
show. The award for this sec
tion will be known as "The
Will Tillotson Memorial
Award" and will consist of
"old fashioned rose bushes do
nated by the Will Tillotson
Rose nursery. This bouquet
must be arranged in an old
fashioned vase, and will con
sist of eight or more old
fashioned roses (introduced
before 1910). Sixty points will
be given for quality of blooms
and 40 points for arrange
ment, fragrance, . and suita
bility of container.

Wearing this "space suit," Miss Colleen Hope opened
the Kiwanian Dames annual fashion show Monday afternoon
at Rogue Valley Country club. Theme of the show was "Out
of This World.'' The suit, made by the California Slikeretle
company for a fashion creator's style show in Los Angeles
earlier this year, is of silver lame and Kreme plastic spat
tered with rhinestones. The suit was brought to Medford by
Parker Woods of Leon's store.

June 17 through 19.
The Dixieland band won
the Yukon ' Command Enter
tainment contest held March
30 and won a trip to Ft. Rich
ardson for the regional con
test. There the Yukon com
mand won the Installation
award for the highest num
ber of points in the contest
and was presented the Alas
kan "Oscar."
In addition to Mr. Maddox'
work with the band he also
directs the Ninth Army band
chorus, the Yukon Choraliers,
and the Four Prospectors, a
barbershop quartet. These
three groups, entered the re
corded part of the Alaska
contest, and each was picked
as a first place winner. The
recordings were sent to Wash
ington, D. C, where they will
be compared with other Army
recordings.
At the regional contest Mr.
Maddox was presented with
plaques for winning the re
corded class with the three
groups. At this area competi
tion the Dixieland band from
Ladd Air Force Base was
picked as one of three to rep
resent Alaska in Virginia.
The week following the All
Army contest 'Mr. Maddox
will be sent to Ft. Lewis for
discharge. This summer Mr.
and Mrs. Maddox and son,
Todd, will live in Medford.

in Negro work in Portland,
the Al Kantor's doing migrant
work at Firebaugh, Calif., and
the Norman Wetther's, with
servicemen in Guam, will be
