Beatrice D. I am nearlv
19 and have been going with
a boy who is 21 for the past
three years. We want to get
engaged, but Bob's father
seems to be trying to throw a
wrench into the whole thing.
Bob's father always seemed
to like me and I had the im
pression that he would ap
prove of the match. But when
Bob spoke to him about it,
he hit the roof and said I came
from a terrible family.
My mother has been di
vorced twice. That certainly
doesn't make her a criminal.
Her marriage to my father
was unhappy and she made a
second foolish marriage on the
rebound. Her present mar
riage is very happy and I
think the world of my stepfather.
I just wouldn't care what
Bob's father thinks, but the
worst of it is that Bob seems
willing to go along and "post
pone the engagement" until
he can "bring Dad around."
Robert G. Bea has eotten
very excited and very sensi
tive about Dad's attitude, but
she doesn't understand it is
natural for him to be so strong
on this point.
Dad had a sister who was
married several times and she
caused him and the rest of
the family no end of grief and
expenses. He has a notion that
anyone who can't stick to
marriage is either immoral or
a neurotic or both. Dad knew
Bea had a step-father, but he
didn't know her mother had
been married three times.
That really upset him and
made him think of his sister.
The wav I look at it is Dad
is all riled up now, but he'll
simmer down. Well be abl
to explain about Bea's moth
er s second marriage. w
aren't going to get married
for a year anyway, so why
not wait with the engagement
until we can do it with every
one feeling good about it?
The Council: Many indi
viduals oppose divorce and
certainly take a dim view of
multiple divorce yet they d
not ' usually stigmatize the
children of divorced parents.
They may believe such a back
ground is a poor one for any
child, but the average well-intentioned
person is willing to
judge the individual on his or
her own merits.
We have a notion Bob's
father may have been rather
surprised by his son's an
nouncement of this impending
marriage. Possibly he feels
Bob is still a little too young
for marriage and feels he has
done wrong in virtual en
couragement of the . young
man's relationship with Beatrice.
Probably he believes he-
should have gotten to know
more about Beatrice and her
background prior to this an
nouncement and he may feel
he has fallen short in his duty
as a father. The suggestion of
unstable marriages in her
background may awaken all
his fears and hopes related to
marital happiness for his son.
In any case, we think it
quite likely he spoke in the
emotional heat of a difficult
moment when he referred to
Beatrice's "terrible family"
and if Beatrice is wise she will
try to temper her reaction
with the realization that the
words came from a loving and
concerned father.
We go along with Bob in
his idea that it would be best
to wait until his father has a
chance to "simmer down."
Beatrice can now show her
mettle by proving she can
understand and appreciate the
feelings of a well-intentioned
parent.

for $1,800,000 worth of sewer
bonds and elected to readver
tise for bids to be opened
May 25. .
The bonds are to finance
construction of a suburban
sanitary system to serve a 300
acre section at the south city
limits of Klamath Falls.
