Hollywood ; (un Actor
Ray Danton isn't a bit accom
odating when it comes to pin
ning labels on his personality.
Just when you've got him
pegged as a straight-down-the-middle
nonconformist he con
fides he shaved before the
interview.
And five minutes after the
tall, dark actor who portrays
the tennis-playing husband in
Diana Barrymore's "Too
Mpch, Too Soon" paints a
ward picture of Hollywood as
a flace where an actor has to
dig deep to be stimulated in
his profession, he admits the
whole thing probably is a
coyerup of his own tendency
to.be lazy.
Daily Routine Outlined
In any event, the daily rou
tine Danton outlined during a
brief "time out" for lunch
with his actress wife, Julie
Adams, should send the aver
age actor scurrying for the
psychiatrist's lounge if he
had time to work in an anal

he actually is busier than
when he's making a picture.
"Going to work doesn't re
quire half the energy it takes
to be unemployed," he said in
a half-serious, kidding-on-the
square conversational tone.
Day Begins at 8 a.m.
"A typical, "unemployed
type day begins with going
riding about 8 o'clock in the
morning. An hour later I'm
at the gym,-working out for
a couple of hours so I won't
be stiff. Then I take an hour
for lunch and next head for
the tennis court until dinner.
Aftr dinner I take care of
such things as saying hello to
my child and wife before I go
to my acting class. Or else I
go do some reading.

Space Controversy Seen as
Life or Death for Ame
Br JAMES BAAR
United Press Correspondent
Washington OPI The
House Space Committee has
uncovered a basic controver
sy that scientists contend
could mean life or death for
America.
It can be summed up in
two. overall facts that have
emerged from the committee's
lengthy hearings:
Scientists and military
leaders are generally con
vinced that man's conquest of
space is a pure bet within
25 years.
Each group thinks the
job can best be done if it has
the whip hand.
The space travel forecast
is a Buck Rogers vision come
to life.
Nuclear - powered rocket
ships would travel to such
nearby planets as Mars 49
million miles away. Bases
would be established on the
moon possibly on other
planets.
Meteorologists would pro
vide accurate weather fore
casts or. perhaps even control
the weather itself. Vast new
sources of wealth might be
found on the moon and plan
ets. And possibly most im
portant scientists, may wrest
new knowledge from the far
reaches of space that could
yield to new benefits yet un
dreamed. President Eisenhower has
proposed that the U. S. pro-
Army's Oldest
Horse Has Friend
Washington (IP) Tony,
the Army's oldest working
horse, has a friend in Con
gress. Rep. Joel T. Broyhill (R
Va.) has asked the Army not
to destroy Tony for economy
reasons when the horse fin
ished 18 years of service. Tony
now is stationed at Ft. Myer,
Va., in Broyhill's district.
In a letter to Maj. Gen. A.
T. McNamara, Army quarter
master general, Broyhill said
he was "appalled" by the
"crass ingratitude" of the gov
ernment. ?
"If you will advise me
promptly as to the amount re
quired to provide for this gal
lant steed in retirement,"
Broyhill wrote, "I will do
everything possible to include
that amount as an amendment
to one of the Armed Forces
supply bills.".
Contractors Talk
Laborer Strike
Portland OH Associated
General Contractors called a
meeting of its members here
today to discuss a strike of
laborers that has crippled
heavy construction work in
Oregon.
- Negotiations with the Ore
gon State Council of Laborers,
AFL-CIO, were not expected
to resume until after the meet
ing. The strike started Mon
day over union demands for
a 30-cent hourly package wage
increase.
The- walkout has idled
major highway construction
in Oregon,- bridge and other
projects in the Portland area
and work at Brownlee dam on
the Oregon side of the Snake
river. Some projects which "do
not employ heavy construc
tion workers were not affected.

gram for conquest of space be
directed by two agencies:
1. The Defense Depart
ment's already-established Ad
vanced Research Projects A
gency (ARPA). It would run
all primarily space projects.
2. A civilian space agency
built around the National Ad
visory Committee for . Aero
nautics (NACA). r The new
agency the national Aero
nautics and Space Agency
(NASA) would run all pri
marily civilian - orientated
projects.
The House Space Committee
has been considering the pro
posal at hearings for more
than two weeks. The Senate
Space Committee is beginning
its hearings this week.
All Pentagon officials
military and civilian have
praised the civilian agency
plan in testimony before the
House Committee. But they
also stressed that the Defense
Department should maintain
priority in space exploration.
And there is the rub.
Argue Over Money
Top . space scientists have
argued that the bulk of the
millions spent on space ex
ploration should be given to
the civilian agency..
They contend that if the
civilian agency becomes mere
ly an adjunct of the Pentagon,
limited military goals will
dominate the entire national
program.
They say, in that event,
pure research will be neglect
ed, the nation will lose count
less benefits for peace and
defense and Russia will wind
up dominating the solar sys
tem. At present, the administra
tion-has tentatively proposed
to pump $100 million into the
civilian space program during
its first year. The spending
would rise to about $300 mil
lion by 1962.
Many top space scientists
contend much more must be
given the agency. Their pro
posals range from $500 mil
lion to $1 billion a year.
Calls Figure Minimum
NACA director Hugh L.
Dryden, who drew up the
proposed civilian program,
said that the administration
had tentatively proposed
about a minimum figure.
Space . committee counsel
George J. Feldman said "a lot
of people in' the government
don't appreciate that the Uni
ted States is in a life-and-death
struggle with" Russia
for space." v
He said testimony before
the committee shows the na
tion needs a strong, well-financed
. civilian agency under
a strong high-ranking admin
istrator. . '
Space scientists generally
agree that the civilian agency
must vigorously pursue a
broad comprehensive pro
gram not a series of spor
atic crash projects.
For this reason, many scien
tists have shied away from
rushing into some of the hun
dreds of proposed projects
until a broad long-range pro
gram is laid down.
