Troubles Increased;
Fatherhood Charged

named by a pretty, 25-year-old
divorcee as the father of
her six-month-old daughter.
The charge, made by Mari
lyn Scott, a switchboard op
erator and stenographer, add-
j ed to young Crosby's already
mounting irouoies growing
out of his marriage Sunday
night in Las Vegas to show
girl Pat Sheehan, 26.
Born in 1957
- Mrs. Scott, who was re
ported to have used the name
of Miller professionally, in
pursing a career as an actress,
claimed Dennis fathered her
daughter, Michelle Denise
Scott, born Nov. 24, 1957, at
Cedars of Lebanon hospital.
The sensational claim
brought no comment from
father Bing or the Crosby
clan. Mum was the word from
Dennis and Mrs. Scott after
the original claim that young
Crosby was a father.
Dennis' troubles started a
few hours after his Sunday
night marriage to Miss Shee
han, a divorcee and mother
of a six-year-old son, when
the couple learned they had
been married by a Protestant
minister at the Gretna Green
Wedding chapel, instead of a
justice of the peace.
'Sorry For Mistake
Dennis, a Roman Catholic
like his father, his twin, Phil
ip, and brothers Lindsay
and Gary, issued a joint
statement with his statuesque
bride, an Episcopalian, saying
they were "sorry" for the
mistake, that they had in
tended to be married by a
justice of the peace. ..
The bridegroom said he
would attempt to reconcile
the wedding to Miss Sheehan
with the Catholic church. He
had no sooner said it than
Mrs. Scott made her claim.

has been awarded a Danforth
fellowship which will enable
him to meet, annually with
Christian graduate students
and college professors and
will assist him to obtain his
doctor's degree.
Danforth foundation is a
private organization which
encourages the combination
of religious ideals and activ
ity and academic success. Na
tional headquarters are in St.
Louis, Mo.
Gunton, a senior at Linfield
college,. McMinnville, is one
of 93 students from the Un
ited States picked for the
award this year. He is a for

Proposed Cut in
Auto Prices Gets
Cold Shoulder
Detroit (TP) The plan
of Sen. Paul H. Douglas, (D
111.), for lopping some $200
off car prices got the expected
cold shoulder from' the in
dustry and warm welcome
from the United Auto Work
ers Tuesday.
Both George Romney, pres
ident of American Motors
Corp., and a General Motors
spokesman condemned the
plan for not spelling out how
labor costs would be cut to
enable price reductions.
Tax Cut Proposed
Douglas proposed that the
federal excise tax on autos
be cut from 10 per cent to
ZV2 per cent, tnat the com
panies cut their prices 34 per
cent and the UAW make un
specified concessions in its
wage and benefit demands.
"The hard and inescapable
facts are that the impact of
past inflationary labor con
tracts has not yet spent it
self," Romney said, and "the
car buyers of the nation need
to know that the outlook is
for higher car prices not
lower car prices."
American Motors has al
ready called for the union not
only to drop its new demands
but to give up the annual
wage increases provided by
the current 1955-58 contract
Romney said if the UAW
would do this his firm could
"avoid further price increases
this fall."
Referred to Testimony
The General Motors spokes
man referred newsmen to the
testimony of. GM President
Harlow H. Curtice before the
senate Anti-monopoiy com
mittee last winter. Curtice
said then that price cuts were
impossible with present labor
costs.
A United Auto Workers
spokesman said UAW Presi
dent Walter P. Reuther has
made proposals similar to
that by Douglas and stands
by those proposals.

Life of Two-Year-Old Boy
Saved by Forced Landing
Of Helicopter on Desert
Twentynine Palms, Calif .(IP) The life of a 2-year-old
boy may have been saved when a helicopter taking him to
a hospital made a forced landing and jolted free the nickel
caught in his throat.
Capt. W. M. Couch, 32, father of the boy, today told how
the only helicopter in this area took off from the Marine base
with him, his, ailing son and his wife and was forced to land
only two miles away'.,-
He said that his son, Frank Charles, immediately began
breathing better and by the time they arrived in an ambu
lance at Riverside Community hospital, 80 miles away,
Frank could begin to talk. .
Couch said doctors believed the jolt of the forced landing
on the rough desert dislodged the coin and allowed it to pass
by his windpipe. Frank, as good as new, was released from
the hospital several hours later. ',
Couch said the boy apparently swallowed the coin while
his mother, Mildred, 31, was talking on the telephone shortly
before noon Saturday. Frank and his brother and sister, Ted,
10, and June, 5, were playing in the living room when his
face went suddenly blue and he began strangling.
Mrs. Couch called her husband who summoned a helicop
ter from the Marine Corps Air Facility at Santa Ana which
was in the area on a routine training mission.
Couch said it has not been determined what went wrong
with the plane but that it made a "controlled forced land
ing." Personnel at the base saw the plane land and imme
diately dispatched the ambulance. :

At Banquet Tonight
Norman O. Nilsen, Salem,
state labor commissioner, will
discuss "The Apprentice Pro
gram and You" at exercises
honoring graduating students
from a course on the plumbers
trade at a banquet at 7 p.m.
today in the Jackson hotel.
The course was offered in
the adult education program
sponsored by the Medford pub
lic schools. Nilsen also will
award journeyman certificates.

dle aged couple accused of j
abducting their grandson from
New Jersey were to appear in
court today in an effort to
gain their freedom after five
days in jail.
The pair, Edward L. Dodd,
46, and his wife, Sue, 42, both
of Miami, have been charged
with kidnaping 5-year-old
Michael Sickle III from the
front yard of his home in Mid
dlesex, N. J. Held with them
on the same charge was
Dodd's sister-in-law, Mrs.
Helen Adams, 36, of South
Plainfield, N. J. . 1 '
All three filed a habeas
corpus petition Tuesday and
a hearing was set for today.

Three Fined in
District Court
Two teenage boys pleaded
guilty in district court this
week to illegal possession of
intoxicating liquor and were
fined $25 each plus $5 court
costs by Judge James M.
Main.
Fined were Donald Law
rence Spaur, 19, of route 2,
box 5872, Central Point," and
David Russel Monia, 18, Med
ford. They were arrested Sat
urday night by sheriff's depu
ties at a Jacksonville dance
hall.
Also arrested at the same
time and charged with fur
nishing liquor to a minor was
Herman Kirt LeFlore, 532
Edwards st.. Medford. He
pleaded guilty to the charge
in district court Monday and
was fined $25 plus $5 court
costs.
