One of the most distressing
things that can happen to a
family is the sudden death of
an infant or
small child
who, shortly
before had
looked well.

will go to bed,
a p p a r e ntly
normal, and
will be found
dead in the

morning. In years 'past, the
conclusion often was that the
child had been smothered dur
ing the night, but soon- physi
cians came to realize that this
could not be the explanation.
Then, for many years, the
theory was that the child had
what is called a large thymus
gland in its chest, but of late,
experts have lost faith in this
diagnosis and have quit mak
ing it. Most of them came to
see that usually, if in these
cases one made an autopsy,
what one found were signs
of an overwhelming infection
of some kind.
I recently read a report by
Drs. Lester Adelson, and
Eleanor R. Kinney, of Cleve
land, who studied the results
of autopsies on 126 children
from 10 days to 2 years of
age who had died suddenly
and unexpectedly. Every pos
sible test was made to throw
light on the cause of the in
fection. The commonest dis
ease found was an infection
of the respiratory tract. Thus,

Van Lee's Super 88 store
will hold a grand , opening
here Thursday morning, ac
cording to owner and manager
Alfred Navarrette.
The store, selling articles
with a top price of $1.88,
will maintain a headquarters
here for branches already
established in Roseburg and
Klamath Falls. Navarrette
said he hopes to open other
stores in Northern California
with Medford to serve as the
headquarters for that area al
so. The store will be located at
227 East Sixth st., next to
Cboley's Appliance. It will
feature housewares, plastic
ware, kitchen gadgets, toys
and clothing, Navarrette said.
"I picked Medford since it
is more centrally located for
the expansion planned for
northern California and south
ern Oregon," the manager
said. "The store will handle
the variety type of merchan
dise with prices possibly go-
-ing as high as $1.88. However,
prices will stay at that level
and will not go any higher."
The store will be of the
self-service type and will em
ploy three people besides the
manager. They are Mrs. Jack
ie Yelton and Miss Marlene
Elliott, both of Ashland and
Barbara Blankership, Phoe
nix. Navarrette worked in the
Medford Big Y store in 1951.

74 children had an acute
laryngitis, and 37 had an acute
infection of the trachea and
the larger bronchi (the tubes
that carry air in and out of
the lungs). Some 19 had
bronchitis, and 24 had either
pneumonia or a purulent;
bronchitis. A few had an acute
inflammation of the salivary
glands under the jaw,, and a
few had a purulent (pus-containing)
form of acute tonsili
tis. Thirteen of the children
were handicapped by con
genital heart disease, and nine
had an inflammation of the
heart muscle.
These findings should give
comfort to those thousands
of women who, for years have'
been grieving over a lost
child and perhaps blaming
themselves for his death. They
not only had nothing to do
with the infection but they
probably could not have pre
vented it, even if they had
known the night before that
something was terribly wrong
with the child. Often, these
extremely acute infections
cannot be relieved by any
treatment.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag
nose by mail.
