of the death of Harry Powell,
former Medford resident, who
died in Hayward, Calif., on
Thursday. Funeral services
will be held in Hayward
Tuesday. Mr. Powell worked
for the Southern Pacific rail
road, and lived at 523 North
Bartlett st., Medford.
Ashland Alarm The
Ashland fire department re
ports answering an alarm at
11:20 a.m. Saturday for an
overheated oil stove at the
residence of Kayne LaTour-
rettee, 446 Allison st. They,
reported no damage. The
alarm was the first answered
by the department since April
23, officials reported.
Injures George Hall, 16,
of 388 South Stage rd., is re
ported in satisfactory condi
tion suffering from undeter
mined injuries when a trac
tor rolled over and pinned
him, according to Medford
Osteopathic hospital officials.
He was taken to the hospital
by Medford Ambulance Ser

a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be
in the Mountain View ceme
tary. Mr. Gilson died in the Sec
red Heart hospital early Sat
urday morning. He was born
in Hornbrook, Calif., on Oct.
11, 1906. He has been a resi
dent of Ashland for the past
eight years, moving to the
community from Klamath
Falls.
Mr. Gilson was a member
of the Ashland American Leg
ion post number 14 and the
Ashland Elks lodge. He served
in the Army during World
War II. Members of the Ash
land Elks club will officiate
at funeral services.
Survivors include his wife
Iris Irene Gilson, Ashland;
son James Keith Gilson, San
Antonio, Tex.; daughter Mrs.
Lois Jennings, Los Angeles;
and his parents Mr. and Mrs.
William James Paull. Four
grandchildren also survive.

Jennie E. Coulter. 82, of

of a sudden illness in her
home Friday afternoon. She
was a long-time resident of
the valley, being born in what
is now Phoenix, Oregon, on
August 12, 1876.

chapel in Ashland. Burial will
be at the Grants Pass Odd

Navy Announces New
Enlistments for Women
Portland The Navy has
announced that it is accepting
women in the regular Navy
for three year terms. This is
in addition to the regular four
and six year terms, the Navy
said.
Women interested in join
ing the Navy may obtain ad
ditional information from the
Navy recruiting office in Med
ford. There's no "off-season" in
newspaper-reading. The news
paper habit is constant
through the year. The same
number of newspapers are
bought through the summer
