Motors Designed
For Automation
Bufalo. N.Y. 'W The
Westinghouse Electric Corp.
has introduced a new line of
direct current motors and
generators designed for auto
mation. The new motors, according
to Thomas Turner, vice-president
in charge of the Westing
house motor and control di
vision, provide "dependabil
ity and performance charac
teristics which will spur the
development of further auto
mation processes."
Turner said one of the most
significant features was the
new motor's silicone insula
tion. "Accelerated life tests show
that this new DC motor insu
lation system will last at least
10 times as long as ordinary
insulation under any temper
ature conditions," he pointed
out. "This gives the user re
duced maintenance, for with
it he can keep production go
ing through many emergen
cies that would otherwise
cause breakdowns or very
short motor life."
Whilt silicone has been used
in the past on cusom-built
motors and special purpose
lines such as mill motors, this
is the first time silicone in
sulation has been used on
standard general-purpose DC
motors.

England Describes
Nuclear Explosion
London OP) Prime Minis
ter Harold Macmillan an
nounced today that the nu
clear device exploded by Bri
tain Monday was "in the
megaton range."
That meant, in other words,
that it almost certainly was
an H-weapon.
Macmillan told the House of
Commons that scientific meas
urements are being collected
for accurate evaluation, "but
early indications are that the
fallout will be negligible. The
test was in the megaton
range."
It was the first western nu
clear explosion since Russia
made an announcement it was
conditionally halting its own
nuclear tests.

Is That So?
By EUGENI BURNS
Raitger-Naturalist
Is it true that the dominanx
rule among wild animals is
the "law of tooth and claw,
"survival of the fittest?"
Not wholly.
Certainly there is plenty of
killing, mainly for purposes
of food and self-protection.
But there is also a surpris
ingly strong drive toward co
operative behavior, too. A
sort of natural, nonconscious
working together between
the species.
Recent experiment show
that benefits come from some
crowding not overcrowd
ing while isolation appears
to be fatal.
In larger colonies of her
ring gulls, courtship activities,
egg-laying and hatching pro
cess are faster than in '.he
smaller colonies. The result
is more young gulls survive
than in the smaller colonies.
Among larger animals,
those living in herds tend to
show greater size, reaction,
speed and general survival
ability than the same type
that are isolated. Apparently,
they unconsciously know the
advantage in co-operation.
This cooperative principle
exists even between the lion
and the antelope on which it
preys. A young lion, just
learning to hunt, will some
times kill more than it can
eat. Adult lions, however, are
noted for killing only enough
to satisfy their hunger. The
predator evidently knows if
he kills more than he needs
he is injuring himself. And
for that reason lions liave
often been seen in the com
pany of animals on which
they feed..', '
In short, there is plenty of
evidence . that cooperation
among 'animals is a stronger,
more widely observed law
than that of the tooth and
claw.
A lesson, perhaps, that man
would do well to ponder.
