says a career secretary must
have all of the attributes of
a good Girl Scout.
She must be courteous,
thoughtful, loyal, dependable,
tactful and responsible all
this, and human, too. ,
B. C. McCall, a social re
search consultant, said a suc
cessful boss-secretary relation
ship can require as much time
and effort as a successful mar
riage. McCall reached these con
clusions after conducting a
study for American Photo
copy Equipment Co.
He interviewed 250 bosses
and secretaries representing
various parts of the country
and various types of business.
A good secretary wears
many hats, McCall said. She
must be:
A "boss-freer." An ac
complished organizer, she
should free her boss from rou
tine and administrative de
tails. An administrative assist
ant. She should have the ini
tiative and ability to make
decisions in her boss' absence,
within limits.
A confidante and adviser.
She should combine the tra
ditional feminine quality of a
responsive ear with the rather
less traditional one of discre
tion. An informed member of
the company. She must be
well-versed in the technical
jargon of the business.

Economy Rolling You Auto
Buv Now" campaign was
developed to restore consum
er confidence in the economy
of the area and to stimulate
retail buying, according to
the sponsors.
The campaign is being
spearheaded by the Medford
Automobile Dealers associa
tion and supported by the
combined efforts of the Jack
son County Chamber of Com
merce, business leaders and
civic officials.
The slogan is intended to
convey the basic concept of
"cars and confidence" and to
allow for community - wide
support and participation in
the program.
Keep Economy Strong
Hugh Coleman and Darrell
Miller, cochairman of the
10-day drive which starts
May 1, said if "Medford is to
grow and prosper, we need
to keep the economy strong
with the lifeblood of com
merce, the flow and exchange
of dollars for goods and serv
ice."
"We can contribute to the
strength of the economy by
maintaining our normal pur
chasing pattern," they point
ed out. "It is only when we
fail to make these necessary,
planned purchases that we
upset this balance of com
merce." The cochairmen p o i n te d
out that everyone will benefit
from the campaign the pur
chasing public, the media, the
community, and the auto
mobile dealers.
Purchasing Public
The purchasing public will
receive value for money
spent, plus the change to fur
ther help the total economy
by release of more dollars,
and the opportunity to par
ticipate in various contests in
connection with the cam
paign. The media benefits, they
said, through stimulation of
the local business com
munity, without which they
could not continue to operate.
Revenue derived from ad
vertising of the sponsoring
and supporting groups also
benefits the community.
The community itself bene
fits by the business activity
generated. It will see the
benefit through an estimated
$10,000 cash outlay which
will be spent almost immedi
ately, plus the far-reaching
effects of the retail buying
during the 10 days and be

Automobile dealers will

1856 Melodecn Sought

Town officials are looking for
an 1856 "melodeon" to com
plete the furnishings of a
shrine commemorating the
first kindergarten in the coun
try. The melodeon, a small reed
organ, was used by Mrs. Mar-
arethe Schurz, who taught the
first kindergarten class here
101, years ago. Her husband,
Carl Schurz, later was secre
tary of state and a U. S. Sen
ator from Missouri.
The shrine is open to the
public. Wax figures of the
original six children and their
teacher are inside the small
building.

ca's annual growth volume of
saw-size trees-rlarge enough
to make lumber for homes
is virtually in balance with re
moval, the Minnesota Commit
tee of American Forest Prod
ucts Industries sid.
Raymond J. Wood, chair
man of the committee, said
commercial forests in the
United States are growing
enough sawtimber each day
to build 15,500 new one-family
frame houses.
Wood said the brightest-star
on the timber horizon is rapid
growth of young m forests.
Latest figures show,' he said,
that annual timber growth on
trees five inches and over in
diameter is 25 per cent great
er than removal by harvest
and all other causes fire, in
sects and diseases.
Steam Engine Made
At Home as Hobby
Chattanooga, Tenn. (IP)
Floyd Messer always has
liked steam engines so he
made one at his home as a
hobby.
Messer collected parts from
many places and welded many
of them himself. His engine
is made up - of about 85 per
cent automobile parts ranging
from a hydraulic brake cylin
der to heavy duty tires.
The home-made engine can
go about 10 miles an hour.
When Messer takes it out for a
spin, the neighborhood young
sters come running.
Messer says that all his life
he wanted to mke a steam en
gine "to prove to myself that
I did know how."
The first balloon tires were
introduced on U. S. cars in
1922.
Chicago (W The average
six-room house in a metropoli
tan area collects 108 pounds
of dirt per year, a study
shows.
Almost 53 tons of dirt fell
per month on every square
mile of Chicago during 1956.
And residents of Los Angeles,
New York and other major
cities were bombarded by
similar amounts.
These amounts were com
piled by Servicemaster, a na
tional home furnishings care
organization dedicated to
cleanliness.
Suburban and small town
dwellers don't have it as bad
as citizens of big cities, but
the dustfall even in rural
areas is considerable, the
study showed.
Servicemaster said that the
American public spends more
than two billion dollars an
nually in cleaning and repair
bills, to say nothing of expen
diture of elbow grease.
The real villain isn't the
dust that shows up plainly on
polished table tops. It's the

going in a condemned house
so the local firemen could
practice latest fire fighting
techniques.
"It is difficult to get a fire
going in an empty house,"
Assistant Fire Chief Don
Burrows explaned.
"atmospheric soil" that lodges
in carpets, upholstered furni
ture and draperies, the com
pany said.
"Atmospheric soil" means
the oily film from cooking,
heating, industrial waste, au
tomobile exhaust and other
sources.
Carpets should be kept free
of fiber-cutting grit by vac
uuming the entire carpet
twice a week, Servicemaster
said, and by vacuuming traf
fic areas daily.
