The Medical
Wax in the Ears
In my youth, when I was in
general practice, I used to see
persons past middle age who
said they had been getting
deaf. When a glance showed
me that the external auditory
canal was full of wax, I would
get out a special syringe with
which I could force a jet of
warm water
into the ear.
In a few min
utes, out
would come a
plug of wax,
and my pa
tient would be
able to hear
well again.
One day I was
surprised t o
Dr. Alvarez
find embalmed in the wax a
small wasp. When I showed it
to the man he said, "For good
ness sake; you know one day I
thought I was getting ear
noises; there was a loud buz
zing in that ear; I stuck' my
little finger in .and the buz
zing quit." " ' .
. There are some persons
whose wax-making glands are
too active and they should get
their auditory canals washed
out occasionally.
Repealed Belching
Many a highly nervous
person goes to a doctor and
says he has gas. If the doctor
is in a rush, he may hand
him out a diet and some medi
cine to help digestion. But
that is not what the fellow
needs. He has nothing wrong
with his digestion and an x
ray examination would show
that he has no excess, of gas
in his stomach or bowel.
The doctor should have ask
ed, "What do you mean by
gas? Do you bloat or pass
much gas or do you belch?"

Ullman Urges Fruit

Washington (IP) Rep. Al
Ullman (D-Ore.) told a House
subcommittee today the ex
emption for fruit and vege
table growers on produce ship
ment rates snould not be weak
ened.
He said further regulations
would mean further increases
in trucking charges paid by
producers of fruits and vege
tables in eastern Oregon. He
also said repeal of .the exemp
tion could only meaA a sharp
increase in rates.

If the man had said, "I just
belch," the doctor should
have asked, "Do you belch
steadily for a half-hour or
more?" When a man answers
that last question with "Yes,"
I know he is suffering purely
from nerves and often from
great anxiety. He is swallow
ing mouthfuls of air and
bringing it right up again. It
is just a nervous habit like
cracking one's knuckles, and
the best treatment is to use
will power and stop.
Breakdown Feared
I remember the handsome
president of a big company
who came -in one day and
told me he could not sleep be
cause he was belching stead
ily from 10 p. m., until 2 a.m.,
when he would fall asleep
from exhaustion. I simply
said, "What are you badly
afraid about?" and he said,
"I am involved in such a
nasty proxy fight with one
of my big stockholders that
I fear I am about due for. a
nervous breakdown."
When I told him he was
swallowing the air and show
ed him how it was done, at
first he was incredulous and
a bit angry with me. I gave
4-him a sedative and told him
to quit his habit. A few days
later, he came in to admit
that I had been right, and he
had quif belching, except for
a n occasional involuntary
"burp."
