The passing of Art Tatum a year ago
left a deep void in jazz, but Verve has
come along with three fine albums which
feature the great piano work of this
jazz giant. Included are "The Art Tatum
Buddy DeFranco Quartet," "Makin
Whoopee," and "The Art Tatum-Ben
Webster Quartet." You'll probably want
to add all three to your collection of
jazzomania. "Jazz Ultimate" is a Capitol
entry featuring Bobby Hackett and Jack
Teagarden, while RCA brings us "Any Old
Time" featuring Artie Shaw and his band
as recorded in the late '30s and '40s.
IT'S DANCE TIME: There's good news
for dancers who like to cut a rug in their
own home. "Let's Go Dancing," with Ted
Steele and his band, is Bethlehem's con
tribution; Mom and Pop will like "Dream
Time" featuring Wayne King on Decca;
"Let's Dance with the Three Suns" is
RCA's toe-tapper for all ages; and Perez
Prado's "Mambo Happy," on Camden,
should please the Latin lovers.
COVERING THE CLASSICS: RCA-Victor
has released a two-record album titled
"The Best of Caruso," which should be
heard by all classicists. Reproduction of
numbers sung and recorded as early as
1904 is excellent. Antonio Vivaldi's "L'Es
tro Armonico," a three-record Vanguard
package featuring Mario Rossio conduct
ing the Chamber Orchestra of the Vienna.
State Opera, is a must for all collectors.
"Music for Strings," Capitol's latest Leo
pold Stokowski recording, maintains the
quality and pace set by this noted maestro
in his previous outings. For an hour of
excellent Haydn, whirl Mercury's "Sym
phony No. 100 in G 'Military' and Sym
phony No. 101 in D Major" as played by
the London Symphony Orchestra under
the baton of Antal Dorati.
