stomach, where food Is being digested.
That's why It does not take away a lot
of the good food you need for energy.
Doctors know that feen-a-mint works
chiefly In the lower bowel... removes

Science Finds Healing
Substance That Relieves Pain
Shrinks Hemorrhoids
For the first time science has found
a new healing substance with thi
astonishing ability to shrink hemor
rhoids and to relieve pain without
surgery.
In case after case, while gently
relieving pain, actual reduction
(shrinkage) took place.
Most amazing of all results
were so thorough that sufferers
made astonishing statements
like "Piles have ceased to be a
problem!"
The secret is a new healing sub

Tornado
(Continued)
five seconds of silence and pressure so
severe it made my ears pop. Then came
the second blast."
His ranch home was torn loose at
the floorboards and destroyed. His car,
which had been parked in the drive
way, was found crushed a block away.
But the man one of the few persons
ever to survive the heart of a tornado
lived to confirm that the twister had
two walls and a hollow center. The
sudden pressure drop was also con
firmed by his household barometer; it
was found in the ruins, its needle stuck
nearly three points lower than the low
est reading recorded a few blocks away
at North Dakota Agricultural College.
"T"he second forecasting tool is radar,
which is also used in research.
One of the most successful warn
ing systems is the Texas Radar Tor
nado Warning Network, established
after the 1953 tornado season, the worst
in history. Volunteers periodically scan
the skies through radar scopes; when
unusual echo activity is noted, they
alert all stations.
The year after the network was
established, only two Texans lost their
lives in tornadoes. Even last year,
when a tornado roared into the heart
of Dallas, a city of nearly half a million
people, only 10 met death.
Even more effective than ground
radar, limited because storms must
pass within about 50 miles of it, is air
borne radar. It generally receives bet
ter signals and can seek and follow
approaching storms.
The dream of forecasters is to blan
ket the country with warning networks
which, supplemented by radar and air
craft, could pinpoint tornado-producing
storms with lifesaving accuracy.
Great hope is held for a third tool,
an electronic gadget with a strange
sounding name, sferics. This detection
device, which measures the frequency
of electrical discharges within a thun
derstorm, has revealed that the fre
quency of the discharges increases with
the severity of the storm. More im
portant, it indicates that maximum ac
tivity may occur just prior to a tornado.
This comes close to pinpointing a
tornado beore it happens.
Real accuracy in pinpoint forecast
ing, however, will have to wait until
research reveals
the exact nature
of a tornado and
the storm that
produces it.
Again, radar has
helped here.
Some remark
able radar photographs, taken of a tor
nado storm by the Illinois State Water
Survey's meteorological subdivision,
showed a hook-shaped formation, like
a figure "6," at the edge of the storm
(see photo). Later reports from areas
where the tornado struck proved that
the tornado funnel was in the hook, a
new clue to its exact location within a
storm.
Research at the University of Chicago
expanded on this information. Using
the photos, and others of subsequent
tornadoes, and charting them with
painstaking detail against weather data
available for the days the tornadoes
occurred, Dr. Tetsuya Fujita produced
"the equivalent of a motion picture" of.
the mechanism of a tornado. His
method showed that the tornado "oc
curs within a whirling circulation sev
eral times larger than the tornado
itself. The outer edge acts like a gear,
turning a smaller inner gear (the
tornado) at a much higher speed."
Fujita believes that if this "mother
cloud," which is usually 10 times the
size of the tornado, can be identified
early in its formation, the immediate
area where a tornado may strike can
be pinpointed.
Some meteorologists, looking beyond
mere pinpointing of tornadoes and
other severe storms, hope some day to
eliminate them altogether. Their talk
today sounds as wild as space-travel
talk of yesterday, but there is some
logic on their side. Cloud seeding has
had mild success, and large oil fires and
mild explosions have also been ad
vocated as methods which may dissipate
the energy in a storm before it reaches
the violent stage.
Whatever the methods, man may yet
learn how to tame the tornado and,
instead of suffering from Nature, put
its tremendous power to work for good.
