The speaker explained that
before a person becomes an
officer with the Yard they
attend a 13-week course of
intensive training. This is fol
lowed by a two-year proba
tion period vhen the person
is assigned to a street beat.
During this period the officer
is trained in all phases of
crminal law.
Respect Police
He explained that many ar
rests are made by the public
as residents are raised to
respect the police. He added
that once an arrest is made
the arrested person is taken
to the police station where
the prisoner is told with what
he is charged. The arresting
officer does not see the pris
oner again until in court.
During the trial, the case
may not be biased in any
fashion, Thompson explained,
and it is not until after the
person is found guilty that
the police tell what they
know about the prisoner,
both bad and good. He added
that only criminals are fin
gerprinted in the country and
when an arrested person is
found innocent the finger
prints are destroyed.
The inspector mentioned
that 162 dogs are used in
the London area by the Yard.
He added that they have prov
ed to be particularly useful
at night. Only recently, he
said, they have started being
used on the docks in assisting
in the arrest of narcotics
smugglers.
Assigned to Yard
The speaker added that
once an officer has completed
two years on a street beat

he may apply to the Yard for
duty. After a ten-week course
the officer takes an examina
tion in which the passing
score is 100. Only then may
a person be assigned by Scot
land Yard.
In speaking of his work as
a member of the special
branch which deals with spies,
guarding the. royal family and
VIPs, he mentioned that all
members of the branch have
to be able to take shorthand
notes with either hand on a
notebook in a pocket.
The remainder of his talk
concerned his duties as body
guard for Sir Winston Chur
chill. He explained that Mr.
Churchill picks each member
of his staff himself and re
lated many personal experi
ences that he had with the
former prime minister.

Following his talk the
speaker answered questions
from the audience.

trash can which contained a
masked burglar who was
peeping from beneath the lid.

ing. They are Mrs. Jerry
Tobin, H. D. Christiansen, and

look bleak.

rosy view of things ahead for
the industry.

next month, Gov. Robert D.
Holmes said today.
The governor, who is vice
chairman of the Western Gov
ernors' Conference, is sched
uled to participate in all ses
sions of the week-long na
tional conference being held
this year at Miami Beach,
Fla., starting May 18.
Steel Corp., world's largest
steel producer, forecasts a
moderate upturn in indus
trial activity this summer fol
lowed by a further rise in the
final quarter.
Along with the recovery,
Aurelius saw a period of in
ventory building. He was con
fident that "steel shipments
will be substantially higher
at the end of the year than
they are today."
Charles M. White, chairman
of Republic Steel Corp., na
tion's third largest producer,
believes that the severe in
ventory liquidation by steel
users should run its course
not too long after mid-year.
Despite the fact that Repub
lic Steel's first quarter earn
ings fell short of meeting the
75-cent dividend, the directors
declared it anyhow as "con
crete evidence of the confi
dence" they and the manage
ment have in the future of
the corporation, White said.
J. L. Mauthe, chairman of
Youngstown Sheet & Tube
Co., said his company has ex
perienced a slight upturn in
orders which could "turn into
a definite trend and then
snowball into a steady recov
ery. "The trend of orders re
ceived during March and
April to date seems to indi
cate that the low point of the
recession has been passed."
The whole tenor of corpora
tion officials' statements is
seen as tending toward the
optimistic side in a cautious
way. Everybody warns that
the recovery now said to be
developing will be a slow
one, likely to test the pa
tience of those watching the
process.
Flower Garden Above
Battleship Suggested
Honolulu HP) J. Howard
Pyle, former governor of Ari
zona, suggests that a colorful
Hawaiian flower garden be
built above the sunken hull
of the battleship Arizona in
Pearl Harbor.
Pyle said the garden could
be built on a platform con
structed in the outline of the
battleship above the rusting
bulk.
"Something green, colorful,
living and breathing" should
be built as a memorial to the
Pearl Harbor victims." Pyle
said on a visit to the Arizona
Thursday.
