Safely Dinner Is
Awarded Truckers
Eagle Point A safety din
ner was given for Steve O.
Wilson's" drivers by Don
Stathos, insurer at the Med
ford hotel recently. Two films
on safety, pertaining to log
truck drivers and operation
were shown.
Wilson's drivers were di
vided into two teams for ' a
contest for the next six
months with R. T. (Rudy)
Weidman and Carl Robbins
as captains. The winning team
will win another safety steak
dinner and the losing team
will earn hamburger dinners.
Stathos noted that 'among
Steve Wilson's drivers, per
100,000 miles of operation, the
number of accidents is below
the national average. Wilson
is a member of the National
Safety Council and he partici
pates in the national fleet
drivers contest sponsored by
the safety council. At the next
safety meeting the safety
awards will be awarded.
The main purpose of the
safety contest is to promote
safety among log truck drivers.
Montana Democrat
Criticises Benson's
Rurai Development
Washington (Special)
Sharp criticism of Secretary
of Agriculture Ezra Taft Ben
son, and of the rural develop
ment program, was voiced re
cently by Sen. James Mur
ray (D-Mont), on the floor of
the senate.
. He said, in part: .
"Mr. President, for some
time I have been interested
in the formula by which
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra
Taft Benson and his staff are
aiding family farmers
through their much public
ized rural development pro
gram. "The other day Under Sec
retary True D. Morse sent us
all, bearing his personal sig
nature, copies of the monthly
magazine 'Extension Service
Review, which is issued by
the Department of Agricul
ture. It is the March 1958 is
sue, and is devoted entirely
to glowing articles about the
rural development program.

Bits of Wreckage
For Clue in Crash
Las Vegas, Nev. (IP) In
vestigators patiently fitted to
gether a giant jig-saw puzzle
of wreckage today as a hear
ing opened in the nation's
capital on the tragic air col
lision which killed 49 per
sons. At the same time, the Air
Force prepared for a formal
hearing on reports that six
jet fighters stunted near com
mercial airliners , just hours
after Monday's collision of a
United Air Lines DC7 and an
F100F jet.
Oscar Bakke, chief of the
investigation and director of
the Bureau of Safety, flew
to Washington to report on
the collision before a House
Appropriations S u b c ommit
tee. Pilots Complain on Jels
Chairman Prince H. Pres
ton Jr. (D-Ga.) directed the
probe toward finding out if
either military or commercial
planes had violated the other's
air space.
Complaints that Air Force
jets were doing exactly that
were fiied with Civil Aero
nautics Authorities by pilots
of Continental and American
Airlines planes.
Capt. Robert R. Chase, of
Van Nuys, Calif., said he saw
one of the stunting jets fly
between his American air
liner and a Continental trans
port piloted by Capt. Al
Shelly.
Air Force Probe
Both pilots said the jets
were in Victor Airway about
15 to 20 miles southwest of
Las Vegas.
Air Force reaction to the
report was immediate and
swift. The inspector general
in Washington ordered an in
vestigation of the incident.
"The U.S. Air Force con
siders these reports to be of
an extremely serious nature,
Col. Dean Hess, director of
the Los Angeles Office of In
formation Services said. "The
investigation will be full and
complete, including sworn
testimony."
Dean said a hearing would
be held as soon as Air Force
study of flight records identi
fied the jets. The inquiry
then would be opened where
the planes were based.
"Mr. President, I combed
this magazine almost line by
line to find an example of a
farm family that had been
saved by the program to get
some clue about how it real
ly works. My efforts were
finally rewarded. On page 58,
in an article entitled 'Keep
ing Them on the Farm,' which
is about Choctaw county,
Okla., I finally found this
clear example of the opera
tions of the program. The
article reports:
"Farm people in the county
were quick to take advantage
of the opportunities provided
through the rural develop
ment program., Floyd Berry
and wife are good examples.
Berry operates a 280-acre
farm and has a small grade A
dairy and a commercial beef
herd. 'To supplement farm in
come Mrs. Berry drew on
her experience as a house
wife to get a job cooking in
a local cafe. She works from
6 a.m. to 2 p.m., daily. Her
husband is working at a fill
ing station from 3 p.m. until
midnight.
" 'Berry handles the farm
chores on the morning and his
wife takes over afternoons.'
"This, then is the formula
for successful farming under
Benson. Get your wife a full
time job in town. Get yourself
a full-time job in town.
"If you are lucky, the
husband's in-town wages
will pay the losses resulting
from farming under Benson
and you will still have your
wife's pay as a fry cook to
buy some " groceries and
clothing.
"Mr. President, I think
other Members of Congress
and the farmers of America
are entitled to have this
shining example widely pub
licized and know that this
is the pattern of family farm
life being promoted by the
Benson regime.
"I want it to be entirely
clear, however, that this shin
ing example of the results of
one of Mr. Benson's programs
simply reinforces my own
conviction that he should be
fired before sundown a
conviction I have had for the
past 1,896 days, which goes
back to the day after his ap
pointment."
American currency which
is most frequently counter
feited is the $10 and $20 de
nominations, the U. S. treas
ury department says.
