thing to my sister.
Helen N. I'm having
mother-in-law trouble only
with me, it's two mothers-in-
law.
I am ready to show every
respect and consideration to
my husband's mother, but
when it comes to hi3 sister, I
draw the line. This older sister
is single and lives with her
mother. She takes a very criti
cal attitude toward me, tries
to boss me around, yet wants
to be invited along on all our
vacations, evenings out, etc
. . . Last summer, both she and
Arnold's mother came on our
vacation and I felt as though I
had two mothers-in-law on my
back at every moment.
I have two young children
to bring up and this is making
me a nervous wreck.
Arnold N. I know my
sister Celia can be a pest, but
Helen should consider this
if Celia didn't stay with my
mother and take care of her,
we would have to have Moth
er living with us. And Mother
really can be difficult.
I feel very sorry about
Celia. She was married at 17
to a heel and that kind of
soured her on men and life in
general. She never wanted to
marry again after this guy
ran out on her. She has a hard
life, catering to Mother's
needs, and I feel we should
treat her well and provide her
with a little change and en
tertainment.
If I didn't try to do some
thing for Celia, she would be
left with nothing but work.
The Council: We agree that
Arnold has a duty to fulfill in
relation to his mother and
sister, but we think he has
gone a little overboard on ex
actly what his responsibilities
are.
Ifc-is certainly unfair to bur
den the sister with the entire
responsibility for the care of
the mother. Arnold owes his
sister respite. He should be
willing to take his mother into
his home occasionally while
his sister gets a chance to have
evenings out or a vacation
with her friends.
But Arnold should not as
sume the responsibility for
providing his sister with the
only ent ertainment and
change in her meager life. He
may feel sympathy for her,
but it is not his business to
make up to her for her own
"sour" attitude. Nothing he
can do would bring her any
real happiness in life. Pleasure
and relaxation will not come
to her until she is ready to
give something of herself to
others. She must find her own
friends and own interests.
Arnold is actually doing his
sister a disservice by allowing
her to depend upon him for
her good times. She cannot
enjoy herself when he takes
her along out of a sense of
duty. She needs to wfn her
way among people. When she
has earned the right to be
liked and invited to join a
group, she can participate
heartily, feeling that she is
really wanted. Among outsid
ers, she will also feel a responsibility-
for contributing
to the pleasure of the outing
and will not give free rein to
her surly feelings.
We also wonder whether
Arnold's mother is quite as
helpless as Arnold seems to
believe. Celia may have made
this woihan more helpless
than necessary out of her own
need for a purpose in life.
