    Killer Tornado in Southeast;
Plains Get Snow, Strong Winds

Mudballs in Sky
Omaha, Neb., was hit by
a combination of rain and
blowing dust Tuesday night
and a pilot said he saw mud
balls about 10,000 feet over
Goodland, Kan., due to rain
mixed with dust.
In Colorado, heavy snow
obscured the Rocky Moun
tains in the vicinity of Den

Showers in Northwest
Scattered thunderstorms oc
curred in advance of the

Forecasters said colder wea
ther was expected to over
spread most of the Plains to
day with showers in the
southern portions spreading
eastward across the Mississip
pi Valley and into parts of the
Ohio Valley and Great Lakes
by night.
Generally fair weather was
seen for most of the Middle
and South Atlantic Coast
states with some rain likely

Woodburn Slaying

ted firing a shot which killed
15- year- old John Edward
Manning at his farm home
near here Monday night.
Police said Edward "Rick"
Ferschweiler told them the
shooting was accidental. He
tearfully admitted his .22 cali
ber rifle went off when he
changed hands with the ham
mer cocked.
The lad, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard. Ferschweiler, was
not being held as State Police
and Marion county sheriff's
deputies completed their investigation.

would present the matter to
a grand jury Thursday after
noon or Friday morning to de
termine if charges should be
filed.
Manning's horrified par
ents returned from a Parent
Teachers' Association meet
ing about 11:15 p.m. Monday
to find their adopted son
sprawled in the front yard
with a bullet through his
body. He had been outside do
ing farm chores wnen xney
left at 7:30 p.m.
The shooting occured at St.
Louis, a small community
about one mile north of here,
as the boy's sister, Mary Ann,
12, and Virgil Klinger, a
cousin of Mrs. Manning, sat
inside viewing television.

Two Arrested in Connection With Theft of Bonds

today in a story of internation
al intrigue stemming from the
largest bond robbery in North
American history.
The FBI arrested two men
Tuesday in connection with
the tracking of part of the
$1,789,400 in negotiable bonds
stolen Jan. 25 from La' Societe
Nationale de Fiducie in Mon
treal. Edward Loree, owner of the
Trojan Paper Mills, Inc., of
New York, was arrested in
Miami with $36,000 worth of
the bonds in his possession,
the FBI said.

Puritan Paper and Pulp Co.,
Inc., also of New York, was

Portland (IP) The bank

and equipment brought $221,
639 at a liquidation sale Tues
day. H. W. Raabe, an east side
businessman, purchased the
building for $142,500. Hun
dreds of buyers attended the
sale, some from as far away
as Texas.
Raabe said he had no im
mediate plans for the building.

Police in Montreal recovered
$73,000 worth of the bonds in
an apartment raid April 9.
The Montreal raid also un

tail market. This led nolice
to believe the robbery was tied
in with operation of an inter
national narcotics ring.
Another batch of the bonds
turned up in Switzerland re
cently in the Possession of a
man identified only as Gra
zini. He told police after his
arrest he had received the se
curities as payment from a
gambling casino in Havana,
Cuba.
Skilled Thieves
The FBI began its investiga
tion when "information was
obtained" that some of the
stolen bonds were being offer
ed in the United States.
North Pacific Division
Engineer To Retire
Portland (IP) Col. Richard
F. Ebbs, deputy division en
gineer of the , North Pacific
Division, Army Corps of En
gineers, will retire May 31
after 30 years' government
service, the Army said today.
The carefully planned bur
glary was said to be the work
of skilled thieves. They by
passed a burglar alarm, set up
an alarm system of their own
and cut through steel and con
crete walls of two vaults to
reach the securities. They took
only negotiable bearer bonds.
However, they missed secu
rities worth even more than
those they took. In one steel
cabinet they found records and
documents, but failed to see
a fortune in stock certificates
behind the legal papers.

Tuesday awarded contracts
totaling $4,859,000 for con
struction of new buildings at
the University of Oregon and
Oregon State college.
Also approved was a $33,
945,000 budget for state in
stitutions during the coming
fiscal year, a call for bids to
build the Portland State col
lege library and a physics
chemistry building at OSC.

Oregon City (IP) Steve
Phillips, 5, Oak Grove, was
the object of a search today
after he was last reported
seen near the Willamette river
Tuesday evening.
A neighbor told Clackamas
county sheriff's deputies the
boy had stopped at his home
to borrow rope he wanted to
tie to an oil drum at the river.
The neighbor said he advised
the boy to go home and the
boy left.
Nautilus To Visit
West Coast Ports
Groton, Conn. OP) The
world's first atomic sub
marine, Nautilus, leaves Fri
day for a trip to the Pacific
coast.
The Navy said the boat will
be on a routine mission to
familiarize the Pacific Fleet
with the vessel.
Its schedule is: Panama,
May 4; San Diego, May 12-15;
Mare Island, May 17-24; San
Francisco, May 24-31; Port
Angeles and Everett, Wash.,
June 2-3; Seattle, June 3-8.
Surveys in 35 American
cities show that 74.1 per cent
of the people travel by auto
mobiles as compared with (
25.9 per cent who rely on pub
lic transportation.

first investiture service Thurs
day, April 24, at the Lone
Pine school at 8 p.m. All par
ents and friends are urged to
attend this meeting as each
boy will receive his tender
foot badge. A scout troop
from Medford will be in
charge.
There are 17 boys in the
troop. Ray Martin of Med
ford is scoutmaster and Clar
ence Childers is the assistant
scoutmaster. Cake, coffee and
punch will be served at the
close of the meeting by the
mothers of the boys.
Summer activities planned
for the troop include a fish
ing trip on April 26, a day
hike on May 10, an overnight
er on May 24, and the sum
mer camp at Lake O' Woods
from July 27 to Aug. 3.
The Clarence Childers fam
ily is pretty well recovered
from the flu they had several
days ago. The children are
back in school and Childers
is able to go back to work

by Lone Pine. On Tuesday
afternoon at 3, Lone Pine
played the Howard school on
the home grounds. Varsity,
junior varsity, and the girls
team competed. Friday Lone
Pine will go to Talent where
the varsity team will play at
3 p.m.
