Jets Performing
Acrobatics Came Tec
Close, Pilot Claims
Las Vegas, Nev. U Air
Force jet planes performed
acrobats "closer than we like"
to a commercial airliner near
here on the same day a jet
fighter plumeted onto anoth
er civilian transport, killing
49 persons, the airliner's pilot
reported today.
The report was placed be
fore mlitary and civilian air
detectives who are interview
ing 25 witnesses to the aerial
collision and piecing together
the shattered wreckage of the
two planes. They are trying to
find out why they came to
gether in a cloudless sky and,
most urgently, how to prevent
another such tragic accident.
Clamor for Safety Rules
Congressional clamor for
new safety rules for the na
tion's skyways began minutes
after word of Monday's crash
reached Washington. Two
congressional committees are
already studying the problem.
Civil Aeronautics Board in
vestigators were confident
they could find out the why.
Air safety experts were less
sure they could devise an en
tirely fool-proof traffic system
for the increasingly speeded
up and crowded airlanes.
American Airlines Capt.
Robert R. Chase, of Van Nuys.
Calif., said three jets engaged
in aerial acrobatics "closer
than we like to see them" to
his airliner on Monday about
50 miles southwest of- Las Ve
gas. The ill-fated United Air
Lines plane collided with the
.plunging F100F fighter-trainer
just 12 miles southwest of
Los Vegas.
Zoomed From Selow
Chase said the three jets
zoomed up from below his
plane, climbed to an unde
termined altitude above it and
apparently looped. He said his
airliner was in no immediate
danger, but "1 don't think
they should be there."
Chairman Prince H. Pres
ton Jr. (D-Ga.) announced that
a House appropriations sub
committee will open an inves
tigation Thursday into the
cause of the collision.
An observer was sent here
from the nation's capital by
Chairman A. S. Mike Monro
ney (D-Okla.) of the Senate
commerce subcommittee on
aviation to make a report on
the crash for that group.

Pregnant Picket
Charges Denies
Portland W An official
of Fred Meyer, Inc., has
branded as "cheap prop
aganda" a charge by a union
official that the firm used
pregnant girls from a social
agency to picket a Fred Meyer
store in downtown Portland.
Union pharmacists are on
strike against Fred Meyer
drug sections in Portland for
higher pay.
Earle Chiles, general man
ager of the supermarket
chain, said "We did employ
two women to carry banners
on the picket line but we did
so through reliable employ
ment channels."
The union claims were first
aired Monday night at a meet
ing of the Multnomah Cen
tral Labor Council by Gordon
Swope, business agent for the
Food and Drug Clerks union.
Chiles said "The union
pharmacists claim that one or
both of the women sent us
were pregnant. If they were,
it was in no way apparent
nor did we have any know
ledge of it."
The women carried signs
saying that wages demanded
by the striking pharmacists
would raise the price of drugs.
