Britain Sends More
Troops Into Aden
London OP) Britain
rushed more troops into Aden
Tuesday to try to head off an
Aden-Yemen border war that
could lead to new conflict be
tween Britain and Egypt.
British concern over the
Yemen's recurrent feud with
the British colony and protec
torate of Aden arose last
month when Yemen joined
President Gamal Abdel Nas
ser's United Arab Republic
last March 8.
Reports of Russian arms
pouring into Yemen and an
Egyptian-backed plot to incite
Aden tribesmen against Brit
ain alarmed British officials.

Electroshock Treatments
Many people ask about elec
troshock treatments. I can
recommend them highly in
cases of tie
redit a r y de
pres s i o n in
which the per
s o n, without
obvious rea
son gets blue,
discoura g e d,
utterly miser
able and per
il a p s unable
to do any
thing. Often in such cases half
a dozen shocks will cause the
person to come right out of
his melancholia. In the old
days the shocks were so vio
lent that bones were broken,
but now the current is lighter,
and it is turned on only for a
part of a second, and hence I
no longer hear of broken
bones. The current takes away
consciousness so instantly that
there should be no pain, but
because many persons are so
fearful of the procedure,
many psychiatrists give, first,
a little injection of sodium
pentothal, which instantly
puts the patient to sleep and
removes 'all anxiety. After a
series of shocks, there may be
some loss of memory, but this
should come back.
Some of my psychiatric
friends doubt the wisdom of
going on and giving 20 or 30
shocks when five show no
sign of working a cure. As

they say, when the shocks
don't work, they begin to
wonder if they have the right
type of case for that form of
treatment. For instance, the
last time I saw a man who
was no better for 25 shocks, I
learned from the family that
he had never been depressed.
What he had had were three
little strokes that had left him
slowed-up, utterly miserable
and unable to work. The oth
er patient I saw recently who
hadn't been helped by many
shock treatments proved to
have an unrecognized epilep
sy that had made him slowed
up and had made him look as
if he was depressed. In both
of these cases my 'friend, the
psychiatrist, regretted the
failure in diagnosis but, as he
said, he was doing the best he
could, terribly over-worked
and short-handed.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag
nose by mail.
