Miami University in Oxford, O., re
cently conducted a survey to find out
why its 1,900 freshmen chose Miami.
Perhaps the answers from neophytes
at this university might help your
favorite freshman.
The school's location was the pri
mary reason students of either sex
gave for selecting Miami. For the
young women, the size of the univer
sity and its beautiful campus were the
next-biggest factors, while for the
young men, the institution's business
school and the comparatively low
costs were most attractive.
Other things that influenced the
freshmen to choose this particular
school included: their parents, stu
dents at the university, graduates, and
publications describing the institution.
Interestingly enough, the university's
faculty, its admissions counselor, and
the students' counselors in high school
were said to have had little influence
on their decision.
Here are several suggestions that
will help you and your high-school
senior choose the college best suited
to his or her needs:
1. Consult competent counselors.
Many high schools have college coun
selors who can .be of great assistance.
College representatives also are pre
pared to answer questions about their
own schools and can direct your
youngster to information on other in
stitutions. 2. Study college guides. The guides
list all the colleges in the country and
