Many Kind Persons
Every day my 'secretaries
pick out of my huge mail
perhaps a dozen letters that
they hope I
will find
time to read
and answer,
It distresses
me to be able
to read and
answer so few
of the hun
dreds of let
ters that come
in, but there
just aren't enough hours in
the day. and I am a very
busy man with several exact
ing jobs. Also, so often I am
traveling and lecturing that,
in manv a month, I am out
of my office more days than
I am in.
Many of the letters that
come to me cannot be answer
ed, because I cannot guess
or I shouldn't guess, what the
person has. He may say he
has catarrh, or asthma, or a
cough, or eczema, or indiges
tion, or diarrhea, but how can
I euess what the word he
uses means? Often he says
"I have two doctors but they
don't tell me anything. So,
you tell me what I have and
which doctor's advice should
I take." This is highly com
plimentary, but surely I must
not start guessing about the
fellow's troubles.
Every week, at least one
puzzled woman, writes say
ing, "I have a fibroid on my
womb. One doctor tells me
to be operated on right away;
another says, 'Wait and see,'
and another says, 'Forget it.'
Now, you tell me what to
do." Without having the
woman examined by an able
and conservative gynecologist
I must not start guessing at
what she should do.
Every day a half-dozen
people write demanding that,
by return mail, I tell them
everything about arterioscle
rosis, or asthma or allergy or
colitis. To do a good job at
that, I would have to take
perhaps two weeks off.
Feared for Son
A sad, unhappy woman
writes that she is an epilep
tic. Her son has never had a
fit but she has always feared
he would some day have one.
Now, he is planning to marry
girl who is a bunch of
nerves and has a feeble
minded brother. Should she
(the mother) do everything
she can now to break up the
love affair? Also, what will
be the dangers for her son's
children if he marries this
girl? Obviously, I cannot an
swer her questions without
knowing much more about
her family and the girl's fam
ily. Perhaps the mother has
a non-familial type of epilep
sy and' the girl's brother's
mental retardation is due to
an encephalitis. I would want
to know what the electroen
cephalograms of the mother,
the son and the girl look
like.
I could go on for a week
showing first how utterly im
possible it is for me to read
through the. big pile of mail
that comes in every day; and
second, that if. I could read
it how impossible it would
be to give a really adequate
answer to most of the ques
tions. Some of the writers
list as many as ten questions,
all of them hard to answer.
It distresses me greatly not
to be able to attend to most
of these letters, but lean
answer only some two dozen
a day. I could answer many
more if more people knew
how to be brief and also how
to come quickly to the point.
To show what I mean: Many
a time a secretary will say,
"Here is a ten-page letter in
which a sad woman tells you
all about the trouble she is
having with a delinquent
son." My question immediate
ly is, "Just what does she
want me to do about it?" Of
tentimes the secretary has to
answer: I don't exactly
know; I fear she was just un
burdening her troubled
heart."
Letters Give Comfort
Many and many a time 1
have wanted to thank all of
you good kindly people who
have written me such won
derful letters so apprecia
tive, so kind, and so encour
aging. They warm my heart
and cheer me on my way. It
is so good to know that to
many of you I have been
able to give comfort and
help. For instance, here is a
letter from a woman on a
lonely ranch who, a year
ago, wrote asking me where
in her state she could find
an expert neurologist who
might help her epiletic son.

Here is another letter that
makes me happy. It is from
a woman in her thirties who
says,- "Because of a fibroid
tumor a local surgeon thought
I ought to have a hysterec
tomy, but I still so hoped to
have a child. Your column
on fibroids so strengthened
tjie hands of my good, kindly
family doctor that he encour
aged me to wait, and now I
have the son I so longed for."
I am always glad to receive
helpful and constructive sug
gestions for the column; and
I always try sooner or later
to write something about the
diseases you people ask about.
There are thousands of you
who have written such won
derful letters I greatly wish
I could meet you and talk
to you and come to know
you well. To all of you go
my heartfelt thanks.

Bus Line Set
For Festival
Ashland' A special bus
line will operate for visitors
to the 1958 Oregon Shake
spearean festival in Ashland,
festival officials said today.
The line is scheduled to
operate between various pick
up points in Medford and the
theater entrance 'in Ashland,
they explained.
Routed on a regular nightly
schedule, the new transporta
tion service will be launched
to coincide with the event's
expanded 1958 season open
ing July 28 with a perform
ance of "Much Ado About
Nothing." Also slated for per
formance are "King Lear,"
The Merchant of Venice,"
and "Troilus and Cressida.
The quartet of plays will ro
tate night through Sept. 4.
"Because operations of reg
ularly scheduled bus lines in
the past have not coincided
with Ashland performance
times, festival officials are au
thorizing the charter conveyances-
to end the problem,
thus sparing th theater's pa
trons from awkward waits be
fore and after the evening's
entertainment," a spokesman
said.
