trate on cheaper coal-fired
power stations for the next
year. A government white
paper, outlining capital in
vestment in the electricity,
coal and gas industries, said
that a higher proportion of
projected power stations
would be coal-fired.
Root of Mexican Yam Produces
Success as 'Birth Control Pill'

Washington (IP) Scien
tists believe that maybe
just maybe they have
found the long-sought "birth
control pill."
It is a synthetic hormone
called Progestin, made from
the roots of a Mexican yam.
Preliminary trials, conduct
ed in Puerto Rico during the
past few months, indicate that
Progestin is highly effective
in inhibiting ovulaton and
hence preventing pregnancy
among women who take
one pill a day from the 5th
to the 25th day of their men
strual cycles.
No serious side effects
were observed in the continu
ing Puerto Rican tests. A
number of women complained
of upset stomachs after taking
the pills. But in many cases
this has proved to be purely
psychological. The women
continued to experience gas
tric disturbances even when
they were switched from Pro
gestin to sugar pills.
Dr. John Rock, director of
the Reproduction Study Cen
ter at Brookline, Mass., and
one of the pioneers in Proges
tin research, said in an in
terview that much more ex
tensive testing will be re
quired before doctors can
say positively that the pills
have no long-range undesir
able effects.
But he said the results so
far was highly encouraging.
Among one group, of 206
Puerto Rican wives who have
beer taking the pills for near
ly a year, there have been 19
pregnancies. All occurred
among women who acknowl
edged that they "skipped"
several of the prescribed
daily doses. In another group
of 139 women, there has
has been only one pregnancy.
Progestin has several ad
vantages over other anti-fertility
pills tested in the past,
Dr. Rock said. It does not in
terfere with normal men
struation, if taken as pre
scribed. On the basis of evi
dence to date, it does not
cause permanent sterility.
Women who have taken the
pills for several months have
been able to conceive prompt
ly after halting the medica
tion.
Progestin is fairly expen
sive at present, but mass pro
duction doubtless can bring
the price down sharply. One
drug manufacturer is already
providing the pills (under the
trade name "Enovid") for the
U. S. market.
Significance
The great significance of
the new pills, according to
Rock, is that they answer the
urgent demands of overpopu
lated countries like Japan and
India for a simple, safe, cheap
method of controlling births
in poor and illiterate families.

DDT to eliminate malaria
have sharply reduced the
death rates of these countries,
but the birth rates have re
mained at the traditionally
high levels. '
The result has been a "pop
ulation explosion" unprece
dented in human history. The
population of the world has
grown by nearly 500 million
since the end of the war. It is
still growing at a rate that
will cause it to double before
the end of this century.
North Bend Woman
Drowns in Flume
Empire, Ore. (IP) A 53-year-old
North Bend woman,
Mrs. Margaret M. Rose, ap
parently drowned in a water
filled flume some time Mon
day night at the Cape Arago
Lumber company.
The victim's body was not
discovered until Tuesday
morning, according to Coos
county coroner Brewer Mills.
John F. Ross, the woman's
husband, said she accompan
ied him to the mill site about
6 p.m. Monday but as they
started to walk over a dock
she decided to return to their
car and wait for him. He said
his wife had been in ill health
and subject to fainting spells.
When he returned to the
car about 7 p.m. she was not
there and he notified police,
he said. The body was discov
ered in the flume below the
bridge.
Waterlogged Dam
Apparently Doomed
Bennettsville, S. C- (IP) A
waterlogged earthen dam,
leaking water from a 300
acre lake through rapidly
widening cracks appeared
doomed today.
Authorities said that a full
break might come , "any min
ute." About 250 families liv
ing in a low-lying area below
the structure left their homes
late Tuesday when the rain
swollen lake began threaten
ing its retainer of red clay.
Rain which began here
Tuesday morning continued
to fall heavily during the
early morning hours Joday.
National Guardsmen were
standing guard around the
evacuated area and the State
Highway department was cut
ting a diversionary channel
in an effort to reduce the
pressure on the dam. ,
