Pierce, Dick Donovan, Bob Keegan,
and Bill Fischer, the Sox have added a
proved veteran in Early Wynn and
badly needed bullpen strength in Ray
Moore. Sherman Lollar is the second
best catcher in the league, and Luis
Aparicio and Nelson Fox the best
second-base combination. Outfielders
Jim Rivera, Tito Francona, Jim Landis,
and Al Smith will steal a lot of base
hits from opposing batters, but there
isn't a real slugger among them.
Fourth, Cleveland Indians. It will prob
ably take Frank Lane two years to get
the Indians back into a contending
position. Already, he's put some zip
into a colorless ball club by dealing for
Minnie Minoso and hiring manager
Bobby Bragan. But the Indians still
have serious deficiencies. Avila and
Carrasquel at second and short don't
provide many base hits. Vic Wertz, at
first, is aging. The outfield, behind
Minoso, isn't imposing. Herb Score
if his eye injury has left no psycho
logical scars is the best pitcher in
baseball. Bob Lemon should come back
with a big season, and Don Mossi and
Ray Narleski are brilliant performers.
Fifth, Baltimore Orioles. After missing
the first division last year by a whisker,
Paul Richards' Orioles are drawing a
bead on higher quarters. They might
get there if Richards' genius for re
habilitating tired pitchers works with
Jack Harshman and if Larry Doby
comes to life. Robinson, Miranda,
Gardner, and Boyd around the infield
are good glove men but, except for
Boyd, aren't much with a bat. Gus
Triandos provides the Orioles some
power behind the plate, and Al Pilarcik
and Bob Nieman may give Doby some
hitting help in the outfield. Besides
Harshman, Oriole pitching will be
handled by Billy Loos, Skinny Brown,
Connie Johnson, Billy O'Dell, Ken
Lehman, and reliefer George Zuverink.
Sixth, Boston Red Sox. Ted Williams
(see cover and above) is easily the
greatest hitter in baseball, but even the
mi'ghty Williams can't lift the Red Sox
from a second-division finish. Williams,
at 39, is ready for the greatest per
formance of his career. He'll start the
season in good health and psycholog
ically better-equipped than he's been
in many years to draw a bead on new
batting achievements. It's been almost
two decades since Williams was the
last player to post a .400 batting mark;
this is the year he may do it again.
The Red Sox outfield, with Jensen
and Piersall flanking Williams, is
potent, and Sammy White is a com
petent catcher. But from there, things
tail off. The infield is uncertain, with
Dick Gernert and Frank Malzone the
best of a mediocre lot; Pete Runnels,
just ' acquired from Washington, may
add some hitting strength. Pitching is
below average, with not much behind
Tom Brewer and Frank Sullivan.
Seventh, Kansas City Athletics. The
tradingest club in the league still has
a long way to come. Newly acquired
Bill Tuttle, Frank House, and Duke
Maas will help, but the Athletics still
have many a glaring weakness. Tuttle,
Woody Held, Bob Cerv, and Jim Small
will give good outfield speed but not
much power. The same is unhappily
true of Joe De Maestri, Hector Lopez,
Mike Baxes, Billy Hunter, and Vic
Powers in the infield. Hal Smith and
House provide good catching, but the
pitching staff is either young and un
predictable or elderly and drearily
predictable.
Eighth, Washington Senators. Loaded
with youngsters of doubtful quality,
the Senators could use a few years of
minor-league experience en masse.
However, things being as they are,
they'll have to get the experience look
ing up at the rest of the American
League. Lou Berberet, Clint Courtney,
and Ed Fitzgerald give the Senators
fine catching, Eddie Yost is a top-flight
third baseman, and Roy Sievers ranks
right behind Williams and Mantle
among American League sluggers. As
for the rest of the Washington club
give 'em another year or two and some
may turn out to be bona fide major
leaguers.
The batting champions this year will
be Williams and Musial, with Mantle
and Hodges winning the home-run
titles. The top rookies will be Norm
Siebern of the Yankees and Steve
Bilko (the oldest rookie in baseball!)
of the Redlegs, and the Nationals will
clobber the American league in the
All-Star game. The 1958 world cham
pions? It'll be the Dodgers, in seven
games, after which Casey Stengel will
retire to dig oil wells.
