"The producer had a problem. The lion sent by casting
didn't look like a lion. It had no mane.
"Call Leo Chenko!"
A squat, happy-faced little man bounded in, looked the
lion over, and took the job. A short time later, he had
designed a lion's wig, and while the producer held his
breath and the trainer held the lion, the wig was fitted into
place a perfect match in color and texture.
Chenko, a former ballet dancer who drifted into design
ing by creating costumes for his own numbers, isn't
always asked to create for such realistic models. Most are
beautiful dancers who dress up as animals for Broadway
musicals, ice shows, and television programs (Perry
Como's, for instance).
A stickler for realism, Chenko spends his free time at
the zoo studying animal behavior, and he isn't reluctant
to use the real thing if necessary. He can get by with
brush bristles for whiskers, but for one dance involving
mythological creatures he dressed the half-men-half-goats
in real goatskins. Trouble is, it's beginning to affect his
outlook on life.

about the costume she will soon perform in.
