New Layoffs Rise
During First Week
Of This Month
Washington (IF) New lay
offs of workers covered by
unemployment compensation
rose by nearly 80,000 during
the first week in April, but
the Labor Department said
this did not indicate any ma
jor surge in unemployment.
The department's bureau of
employment security said
further layoffs in the auto in
dustry in Michigan, New
York, California, Indiana,
Kansas, Ohio, Texas and 11
otner states were an impor
tant factor" in the increase.
The 79,900 rise pushed the
total for those filing claims
to 501,800 the highest figure
since January when initial
claims climbed past 600,000,
The bureau said the num
ber of new claims normally
rises during the first week in
April. But last week's total
was nearly twice as high as
the 260,000 total for the same
week a year ago.
On the brighter side, the
bureau said the overall num
ber of workers carried on job
less benefit lists dropped by
2,900 to 3,276,500 in the week
ended March 29. That was the
fifth week in which total in
sured unemployment had re
mained virtually unchanged.
As a result, the jobless rate
stayed at 7.9 per cent of the
43 million workers covered
by unemployment compensa
tion, the same rate, reported
for the week ending Feb. 22
The total for the same week
a year ago was 1,508,000.
