Fear
In an unusual book on
Fear, written in 1931 by that
able psychiatrist, Dr. John
Rathbone Oliver, he says, so
wisely, that normally our
awareness o f
heart, lungs,
bowel, stom
ach and kid
neys is below
the level o f
our conscious
ness. Occa
sionally, for
some reason
or other, the
Dr. Alvares level Of OUT
consciousness is lowered and,
with this, we can feel the
functioning of our organs, and
can be distressed over this.
We can feel the beating of
our heart and the motions of
our bowels.
Dr. Oliver did not like psy
choanalysis. He said that ei
ther you will become impa
tient after perhaps the six
teenth session and go home in
a huff with the "rough ends
of your mind sticking out in
disorder all over you," or else
Centennial Theme

The centennial theme, to be

entertainment in a program
of music and spoken dialogue
now being arranged under the
supervision of Mrs. Stan Za

said.
' Music at the beginning of
the evening will be provided
by Lynn Sjolund and his sen
ior high choir, while other
portions of the program will
be furnished upon tryouts now
being conducted, he said.
Additional members of the
general dinner committee an
nounced by Boyer included
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnston,
Mrs. Fred Middlebusher, Mrs.

Emeritus Consultant ta Medicine,
Mayo Clinic .
Emeritus Professor of Medicine,
Mayo Foundation
you will become so dependent
on your analyst and the emo
tional outlet that your ses
sions with him afford you,
that you won't be. able to tear
yourself away, and you will
go on being psychoanalyzed
all the rest of your life.
He tells of a patient who
begged for an antidote for
fear. "Tell me how to stop
being afraid." The doctor said
he knew of some antidotes
that helped a little, but he
knew of nothing that would
put a complete stop to fear
ing. "As one dear old soul
once said to me, 'You tell me
to stop worrying, doctor. But,
for God's sake, tell me how!"
I couldn't tell him. I knew no
answer.''
The only suggestion Dr.
Oliver could make was that
there are certain places in
which a very fearful person
feels safer, much as a chased
rabbit feels safe in his bur
row. For instance, a woman
with a terrible fear of heart
disease had no more panicky
attacks when she moved into
an apartment next to that of
her heart specialist. Another
woman, when great waves of
vague fear came over her, got
relief by staying for a while
in a mental hospital.
Dr. Oliver said, "Happiness
and success can be achieved
only by doing the same thing,
the right thing, day in and day
out over and over again. No
man or woman who aims at
successful achievement can es
cape the burden of routine."
