Cleveland, Ohio (OV A
Chicago attorney and a Colo
rado Supreme Court justice
Friday failed to see eye to
eye on the controversial ques
tion of permitting photogra
phers and radio television
broadcast equipment in court
rooms.
Chicago Attorney Wayland
Cedarquist held that "courts
exist, not to entertain or to
educate the general public
but to decide disputes involv
ing individual citizens."
Hold Against 'Discrimination'
But Colorado Chief Justice
O. Otto Moore held that mod
ern techniques of communica
tion have improved to the ex
tent that to bar newspaper
photographers and radio and
television broadacast equip
ment would amount to "dis
crimination against a recog
nized and highly efficient
method of dissenination of
news."
The two men debated the
controversial Canon 35, Code
of Judicial Ethics of the
American Bar association, be
fore delegates to the annual
Ohio Association of Broad
casters convention here.
Canon 35 has been adopted
by several state supreme
courts as the rule of proced
ure. In Colorado the rule has
been ignored and photography
in the courtroom is up to the
rule of the individual judge
