Nomination Ruling
Given By Clerk
Any person now registered
as a member of either major
political party who was not
a candidate for nomination
at the primary may accept a
nomination for election in the
general election, according to
Freeman Holmer, director of
the elections division of the
secretary of state's office,
Salem.
The statement was in reply
to a question asked of County
Clerk Bereth P. Hopkins, re
cently. There had been doubt
that a person now registered
as a member of the Republi
can or Democratic parties
and continuing that registra
tion through August could

New High Speed
Film Developed
Rochester, N. Y. W
A new high-speed, high-contrast
color film for missile
tracking and other specialized
uses has been developed by
the Eastman Kodak Com
pany's Research Laboratories.
The new film, known as
SOI 2 18, is a fast negative
color film which possesses as
an important feature a high
contrast.
This feature, along with the
color contrast, makes the tar
get object more easily visible
against a background such as
a gray or blue sky, according
to Allan G. Millikan, senior
research chemist at Kodak
Research Laboratories.
Millikan noted that missle
and rocket tracking requires
both special cameras fitted
with elaborate electronic de
vices and film with unusual
characteristics.
Where long focal length
lenses with low light-gathering
power are used to follow
the flight of a fast-moving
missle, this high speed film is
proving especially useful, he
said.
In some missle-tracking the
color photo may be examined
as a negative. Or a color print
may boost contrast and give
an even better record for eval
uation. It is expected, said Milli
kan, the new color system
will find specialized uses in
industry as well as in the
field of guided missies and
rocketry.

visions of the minor political
party regulations.
The Oregon law states any
minor political party, indi
vidual registered elections or
assembly of not less than 250
registered electors of the
state, county, precinct or
other electoral district may
nominate one candidate for
each public office to be filled
at the general election. The
candidate must prepare and
file a certificate of nomina
tion. Mrs. Hopkins has reported
that many addresses have
been changed recently by the
post offices in Jackson coun
ty in both city and rural
routes.
Address Changes Considered
She stated that it is not
necessary for residents to re
register where the address has
been changed by the post of
fice. She added that it would
aid the elections department
if voters who have been af
fected by the change notify
the county clerk's office. The
changes must be in person at
the office or by a card bear
ing the signature of the writ
er. No changes will be made
by telephone, she reported.
Mrs. Hopkins reminded
voters those persons moving
from one precinct into anoth
er must re-register to be elig
ible to vote in the May 16
primary election. Anyone
changing their name by mar
riage or for other reasons
must also register.
It was also mentioned that
any persons who did not vote
in at least one of the two elec
tions held in 1956 will have
their name removed from the
list of eligible voters as re
quired by law. Mrs. Hopkins
stated that anyone in doubt
about their registration
should contact the office at
SPring 3-6211, extension 200
or 217.
Voters' pamphlets for Jack
son county are expected to
reach the county clerk's of
fice by April 17, it was re
ported. The pamphlets will be
distributed from tnat ouice
A total of 32,793 Jackson
county residents are regist
ered with the county elections
department as of April 9, ac
cording to Mrs. Hopkins.
Registration by party
shows 16,783 Republicans and
15,274 Democrats. There are
736 registered as miscellane

Eileen S. He holds me up

John S. It's just a harm
less bit of fun.
Eileeen S. My husband
and I have been happily mar
ried for 13 years and we have
five wonderful children. John
has been a fine husband
in every way, except that he
has one fault that gets my my
goat. He says I'm sensitive,
but I can't help it. This both
ers me very much.
John likes to hold me up to
ridicule in front of people
especially his own family. He
happens to be a very good
storyteller and he really holds
people's attention, making me
the butt of all his jokes. Some
times he brings up events that
are ancient history to point
out some error of mine.
I really resent this when
he does it in front of his. fam
ily. We don't see them often
and they only know me
through these silly stories of
his.
John S. Eileen doesn't
know when she is well off. I
know many a man who is
lovey-dovey with his wife in
public and really takes things
out on her in private. Eileen
admits that I always treat her
with love and respect when
we are at home.
The fact is that I enjoy tell
ing a good story. I don't mean
any harm by it. Everyone gets
a good laugn out 01 it every
one, that is, except Eileen
She really fumes. It's so silly
to make an issue of it.
Eileen especially resents my
ribbing her in front of my
family because they objected
to our marriage.- But that was
a long, long time ago and and
they have completely accept
ed her and bear her no ill
will. I don't see any reason to
get upset about this harmless
bit of fun.
The Council: No, we don't
think Eileen is being over
senstitive. Nobody likes to be
the butt of jokes any wife

would have good cause to be
particularly resentful of this
kind of treatment in front of
her husband's family.
Psychologists believe that
the kind of storytelling Eileen
describes is really "masked
hostility." That is, John has
found a way of psychological
ly attacking his wife and
claiming innocence at the
same time. Eileen is deprived
of the right to even defend
herself because after all, "it's
only a joke."
The men John describes
who are nice to their wives in
public but nasty in private
have other problems, but their
behavior doesn't justify John's
actions.
No, we don't suggest that
John turn nasty it home. But
we do think it would be a
good idea for him to get into
the habit of expressing some
of his irritations and disagree
ments with his wife when he
feels them. Eileen should be
willing to accept this kind of
criticism when she feels it to
be warranted and should be
honest enough to argue the
question out when she feels
her husband is being unfair.
If the marriage is soundly
rooted, as this one appears to
be, the husband and wife
should not fear the occasional
tiffs that arise between per
sons living in any intimate re
lationship. (Copyright 1958,

Is That So?
The word "mouse" conjures
up for most of us an annoying
picture of the common house
hold variety of this animal
which, of course, is false. The
Domestic mice form only a
very tiny fraction of the group
of rodents which are mice.
Quite a number of the wild
members of this group are
handsome, beautifully furred,
with habits as fascinating as
those of the tiger, lion, or ele
phant. But on a small scale,
of course.
Take th harvest mouse.
This tiny, dainty creature
builds a round nest in tall
grasses the outside with
coarse grasses, the inside lined
with finely shredded dry
grass. During mating season,
the male voices a tiny shrill
bugle-like song in a key al
most too high for the human
ear.
The white-footed mouse,
too, is a musician. On oc
casion it indulges in a pro
longed buzzing hum. It also
makes a drumming sound by
tapping its front feet rapidly
on some object such as a dry
hollow reed or a dead leaf.
It has a keen homing in
stinct: taken prisoner, marked
and released two miles from
the point of capture it has
been known to find its way
back within a few days.
Ferocious Hunier
The grasshopper mouse,
also known as the scorpion
mouse, is a ferocious little
hunter. It stalks its prey on
soft padded feet, nose to the
ground. Like the bloodhound,
it gets excited when on a fresh
trail, uttering a series of
sharp squeaks or barks. Once
its prey is found, it launches
itself at the victim's throat,

Be Sure To Send Your Cat's Noseprint
If You Want
By DOC QUIGG
United Press Correspondent
New York (IP) Milton
Weiss, who formed the
world's first concern devoted
exclusively to life insurance
policies for pedigreed pooches,
now is branching out into
pedigreed pussycats.
If you want to get your
cat's life insured, up to $13,
000, you have to send in its
noseprint, have the cat inocu
lated for feline distemper, and
prove its pedigree and value.
And Weiss doesn't mind tell
ing you it's going to take a
heap of proving to get him
to set any cat's value at $13,
000. He established that figure
because it was already in
effect as the maximum in his
dog insurance policies. He has
issued several thousand dog
policies since his Animal In
surance Company of Ameri
ca started business last Aug.
1.
The Nose Knows
He accepts mail applica
tions from anywhere in the
continental United States and
Canada. With the application
form, he supplies a noseprint
ribbon which he has develop
ed himself non-toxic, using
a mineral dye that is deep
blue-black, food for three or
four prints. You press it
against the tiny nose, then
press the paper against the
nose, and you get a print
which he says is a positive
identification. .
Weiss says Jimmy Duran
te's old aphorism "The nose
knows" applies with high cer
tainty to dogs and cats. When
the animal dies, the veteri
narian puts its noseprint on
the death certificate, under
the Weiss plan.
"I've never taken a cat
noseprint myself," he says,
"but they come out very
clear. Cats don't seem to shy
away from the paper as dogs
do. We get some smeared
dog's noses."
Good Accelerators
Weiss doesn't believe cats
are as accident-prone as dogs.
For one thing, they can ac
celerate fast, in front of a
car. And another, you don't
see many pedigreed cats
meandering around outside
that's a recreation enjoyed al
most exclusively by alley cats.
