Meeting Planned
For Forestry Men
An inspectors' meeting for
men from five southern Ore
gon districts of the Oregon
state forestry department
will be held Tuesday and
Wednesday, April 15 and 16,
at the southwest district of
fice on Table Rock rd.
About 25 men, including in
spectors and some overhead
personnel, are expected to at

A Letter To a College Girl
On the Kinsey Report
Dear Miss K: I was much
interested in your letter in
regard to the discussions you
and some of
your pals
have been
having in re
gard to the
latest report
from the Kin
sey Institute,
some girls
saying the sta
tistics should
Dr. Alvarez not have been
published, and others wonder
ing if the yare really true and
must be accepted as facts. As
to Kinsey, I knew him and
was devoted to him. He was
a highly-dedicated man, abso
lutely honest and truly scien
tific. As he lectured to stu
dents on biology, they got to
asking him questions about
sexual practices in men and
women. He became distressed
because so seldom could he
give an answer based on pub
lished data. When he search
ed his library for information,
he found that most of the
writers on sex were arm-chair
theorizers who' had no statis
tics. Three exceptions were
the fine studies by Dr. R. L.
Dickinson and Laura Beam,
Katharine B. Davis, and G. V.
Hamilton. These books con
tained much startling infor
mation, but few lay people
read them, and hence no big
controversy was stirred up.
Kinsey looked about and
found not a single university
in which sex was being stud
ied in man. Obviously, this
was wrong. One of the great
est motivating forces of man
cannot be ignored indefinite
ly. I had already protested to
some scientists about this
lack; I needed information
with which to answer the
questions asked by my pa
tients, and I could not get it.
Naturally, I was glad when
Kinsey tackled the job. When
he published his first statisti
cal work, he and the publish
er expected to sell perhaps a
thousand copies to scientists.
They were astounded when
the book became a best-seller.
As you know, immediately,
many people attacked Kinsey
for writing as he did, but as
he tried to show them, he
hadn't intended to wrjte a
Sunday school book; all he
had written was a report of
what several thousand persons
had said they had done. A
scientist just reports what
happened; he does not feel
that he should apologize or be
horrified or try to preach.
Most laymen do not know this
and hence their violent reac
tions. I was surprised to see
how many men had had ho
mosexual experiences, but it
never occurred to me to im
pugn Kinsey's veracity or to
attack him for what the men
had done in their youth.
Sampling Said Poor
Many people then said the
sampling was poor. Kinsey
knew its defects and hoped, if
he lived long enough, to fill
in the gaps. But let us re
member that these are the
best data we have, and the
most abundant. Let us re
member, also, that in order
to get fine cooperation and
sensible and honest answers
out of a person, he or she has
to have a good intelligence
and a desire to cooperate in
a scientific inquiry. Millions
of stupid people could hardly
be used in the inquiry.
My feeling in regard to the
latest report from the Kinsey
laboratory as to pre-marital
sexual experience and abor
tion is that it is the more sig
nificant because most of the
women were so well-educated.
If they had all been under
privileged girls from homes
of poverty, people would not
have needed to be so upset.
You can assure your friends
that there can be no blame
attached to publishing scien
tific data. The only sin is to
refuse to publish scientific
material because it is displeas
ing to some people. Science
must continue to advance. I
feel that if people cannot un
derstand how scientists work
and think, and how they re
port dispassionately and with
out emotion what they have
found then they should not
be peeking into scientific
books.
Can Get Idea
And, still, I think your
friends can get good out of
this last report. They can get
some idea, perhaps,- of how
awful it is for a single girl to
find herself pregnant. In 50
years, I have talked to many
such girls in the office and
I know they went through
hell mentally. Some seriously

considered suicide. Many
tried to brazen it out and ap
pear hard-boiled, but they
were suffering, all right.
With all this, let us keep in
mind that Kinsey and his as
sociates never had any idea
of using their data to im
prove morals; they just re
ported what had come out
when perhaps 5,000 punched
cards had been run through
the IBM machines.
I imagine many good peo
ple are now saying that, even
if the last report of Drs. Geb
bard and Pomeroy and their
associates is accurate and
trustworthy, it should have
been, suppressed because it
will injure people because
it may encourage them to be
"bad," and to justify their be
havior by saying that since 50
per cent of men and women
are sexually, loose, this is nor
mal. My hunch is strong that hu
man nature will continue to
be the same' old human na
ture it has always been, and
not because of any encourage
ment from Kinsey's group. A
girl who falls from grace will
do so, not because of Kinsey,
but because of two urgings:
one from a young man, and
one from her own passionate
body.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag-

Right To Travel
Washington (IP) The gov
ernment asserted for the first
time Thursday that Ameri
cans have a Constitutional
right to travel abroad. But it
argued this right may be de
nied in the interest of nation
al security.
The assertion was made be
fore the Supreme Court by
U. S. Solicitor General J. Lee
Rankin. The Justices heard
three hours of arguments on
State Department denials of
passports to artist Rockwell
Kent, physicist Weldon B.
Dayton and psychiatrist Walt
er Briehl.
Rankin also argued that the
State Department could deny
passports solely on the basis
on confidential information.
In several previous pass
ports suits the government
did not concede that the Con
stitution guaranteed the right
to travel. It argued that the
Secretary of State was em
powered to determine who got
a passport.
Memphis, Tenn. (IF) The
movie based on the life of
the late composer W. C.
Handy will have its Southern
premiere here this month
with proceeds going to a local
memorial fund. "St. Louis
Blues," will be shown at a
Negro theater April 17 and
a white theater April 18.
