tonight as they seek to break
a 2-2 deadlock in their Na

the rest of the playoffs with

Baseball Interest
Picks Up in Schools
Portland Baseball is pick
ing up in interest in the na
tion's schools, according to
Dr. Creighton Hale, research
director of Little league base

Dr. Hale told the Northwest
district meeting of the Na

Tuesday that in 1956 63.2 per
cent of the schools had com
petitive baseball programs
and that baseball ranked sec
ond only to basketball. He
said that in 1946, baseball
ranked fourth, also behind
football and track, and only

a baseball program.
He credited increased base
ball interest to organizations
such as the Little league,
Pony league, American Le

Thermometer Aids
Aircraft Flights
Chicago W Armour
Research Foundation has an
nounced development of a
thermometer device that can
helD aircraft increase their
ranges and save fuel.
Developed for. the Air
Force's Air Research and De
velopment Command, the
thermometer can assist air
craft in locating jet air
streams and the ' position ; of
maximum velocity in these
streams by giving immediate
readings on temperature
changes.
The device, the f oundaton
said, is a "vortex thermome
ter", which was found to be
effective at simulated alti
tudes up to 40,000 feet and
speeds up to Mach 1.1.
Jack C. Hedge, associate
engineer, said the device can
give pilots direct true free
and temperature readings ac
curate to plus or minus one
degree Fahrenheit while trav
eling at high speeds.
Other methods of locating
et streams by temperature
changes are indirect, Hedge
said, because they involve
correcting temperature read
ings to .compensate for the
aerodynamic heating effect
produced by high speeds.
The Armour device uses a
uniflow type vortex tube
cylindrical pipe creates a
whirlpool or vortex when the
air enters the tube at an
angle in the opening. A cold
region is created in the center
of the tube, compensating for
the high speed heat, Hedge
explained.

Haywards
Thinclads of Medford high
faced trials tdtlay to fill some
of the spots on the aggrega
tion which will represent the
Black Tornado in the metro
politan class of the Hayward
relays at Eugene.
Coach Dean Benson indi
cated that there has been
much work so far this week
by relay men on their baton
exchanges.
The Medford squad is ex
pected to be much the same
as the one which took second
in the Rogue meet here last
Saturday. Benson said it was
hoped to have Glenn Kaye
back for a leg in the mile
relay. He missed participation
in the Rogues because of sick
ness prior to the meet. The
Tornado was second in that
event last Saturday.
Seventh Crown
Medford will be after its
seventh consecutive cham
pionship in the Haywards and
there's good chance the Tor
nado can retain its crown de
spite its finish behind Grants
Pass in the Rogues. Two years
ago the Tornado followed up
a Rogue second place with an
other metro crown.
- More than 70 schools al
ready have entered the ,21st
annual Haywards. Competi
tion in Class B and C will be
on Friday with Coburg and
Oakridge the respective de
fenders. Cottage Grove in
Class A and Medford in metro
defend on Saturday.
Many Children
Have Bad Eyesight
Urbana, 111. (IP) A Univer
sity of Illinois health educa
tion specialist says that about
one-third of today's school
children have bad eyesight
and often neither the child
nor his parents know it.
Pauline Brimhall said that
if a child all his life has seen
double or if things have al
wavs looked blurred to him,
he considers this normal and
thinks nothing' is wrong.
It is up to the parents to
detect faulty vision, she said.
Miss Brimhall advised par
ents to check for these signs
which may mean poor eye
sight rubbing eyes often,
shutting or covering one eye
to focus, moving . the head
around to look at close or dis
tant objects, unusual blinking.
Also she advised parents to
look for any of these symp
toms which may mean tne
child has faulty vision re
curring stys, swollen lids, in
flammation or ' wateriness of
eyes, crossing of eyes, red
rims.
