Seven American
Newsmen Held in
Cuba Released
Havana, Cuba (IP A group
of American newsmen held
for entering restricted terri
tory without proper authori
zation have been released
from custody in Santiago de
Cuba, it was disclosed today.
They were Harold Lidin of
the United Press, Homer Bi
gar of the New York Times,
and Robert Taber of the Co
lumbia Broadcasting System.
Others Released
Three others were released
at 9:30 a jn. (e.s.t.) today. They
were Ward Cannel of NEA,
Ray Brennan of the Chicago
Sun-Times, and Alan Jarlson
of KRAM-KSHO-TV, Las Ve
gas, Nev.
A seventh newsman. Bob
Silva of WKCT Miami, Fla.,
also was reported released.
Brennan said they were not
mistreated.
Negotiations for release of
the newsmen were conducted
in Havana between U.S. Am
bassador Earl E. Smith and
Cuban Prime Minister and
Minister of State Gonzalo
Guell.
In Military Zone
The Cuban government
maintained that the newsmen
were in a military zone dur
ing a state .of emergency
without proper authorization.
Santiago de Cuba is the capi
tal of Oriente Province where
rebel leader Fidel Castro is
carrying on the heaviest part
of his campaign against the
government of President Ful
gencio Batista.
Batista's government an
nounced earlier loyal troops
in eastern Cuba have turned
back rebel thrusts at both
Santiago and Baire inflicting
"sizeable" casualties on the
insurgents."
Airliner Believed

overdue on a flight here from
the big Pacific port of Guaya

ers aboard the plane.
The latest report of the
plane, when it had covered
about three-quarters of the
distance scheduled for its
flight, was that it had been
crippled by engine trouble.
The pilot reported he was
trying to land.

School Play

Butte Falls The junior
and senior class play, "Her
Kissin' Cousin," will be pre
sented Friday evening, April
11, at the high school gym.
The play, which starts at 8:30
p.m., will be a comedy in
three acts.
The cast will include stu
dents Linda Hawkins, Juanita
Sheppard, Nita Hawkins,
Bonnie McKeen, Mike Con
ley, Jerry Ferguson, Dayle
Hawkins and Raymond Ab
bott. Director is Dean Bog
gan, a teacher In Butte Falls
schools.
Admission will be 75 cents
for adults, 50 cents for stu
dents, 25 cents for pre-school
children occupying a seat and
one dollar for reserved seats.
The matinee will be pre
sented Thursday, April 10, at
2 p.m. Admission for grade
school children will be 20
cents.
Students of Butte Falls
grade school will present an
open house for their parents
Friday, April 11, from 6:30
until 8:30 p.m.
All rooms will exhibit
samples of student's- work,
with emphasis on art to show
the correlation of a variety
of activities within the class
room.
The fifth and sixth grades
have been working on spec
ial projects in science and so
cial studies and the seventh
and eighth grades plan to dis
play a composite of daily
work covering a period of
several weeks.
The students of Butte Falls
High school will also have
an open house for their par
ents, Friday, April 11, from
6:30 until 8:30 p.m.
Bob Cupples, science and
industrial arts teacher, will
have several students pre
senting demonstrations in
both the science room and
the shop. Projects completed
and in progress will also be
displayed.
The open house will also
include samples , of typing in
the typing room, homemak-
ing notebooks and sewing
projects. Homemade jam and
canned foods will be display
ed in the cafeteria and new
books will be on display in
the library.

ers and son, Mike, were re
cent week end guests of their
aunt, Mrs. Clara Kent. Mak
ing the visit with them was
Margaret Arthines, a niece
of Mrs. Rogers, and a visitor
in the states from England.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Malloy
and children were overnight
guests last week end at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C.
Black of Medford.- Mrs. Mal
loy is a daughter of the
Blacks.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stowell
returned to their home in
Butte Falls recently follow
ing several months residence
at Shady Cove because of ill
ness. Stowell is reported to
be much improved.
The pre-school clinic held

Portland Holdup
Man Gets $1,450
Portland (IPI An armed
robber held up an all night
restaurant here early today
and escaped with about
$1450.
Mrs. Dorothy Hughes told
sheriffs deputies she was
counting the day's receipts at
the Town Mart cafe about
3 a.m. when a man dressed in
"dirty" clothes entered. The
holdup man held a gun on
Mrs. Hughes and her daugh
ter, Mrs. Geraldine Lyonais,
and forced Mrs. Hughes to
put the money in a brown
shopping bag. He also forced
her to empty the cash regis
ter. The holdup man told the
women to wait five minutes
before calling police. He was
described as 25 to 30 years
old, six feet tall, long sandy
hair and weighing about 160
pounds.

Mrs. "Pete" Gregory was
elected president of Ruch Parent-Teacher
association at

In all three cases the court
found the government had
failed to file "an affidavit of
good cause" along with its
original complaint. The re
quirement to file such an af
fidavit a' kind of bill of par
ticulars was nailed down by
the Supreme court in a 1956
decision interpreting the 1952
McCarran - Walter Immigra
tion act.
Uphaus Appeal Due
In another action the court
agreed to examine the appeal
of Willard Uphaus, who has
been challenging New Hamp
shire's anti - subversive law.
Uphaus is executive director
of World Fellowship Inc.,
which operates a summer
camp at Albany, N.H.

Doria Floating Effort Studied
Trenton, N.J. (IP) A sal
vage firm was studying plans
today to raise the sunken
Italian liner Andrea Doria
from the Atlantic bottom by
a boot-strap operation, then
inch the hulk to shallow
water.
The ship lies 225 feet down L
off Nantucket Island where
it was sunk in a collision with
the Swedish liner Stockholm
on July 25, 1956. Fifty-two
lives were lost.
The AAA salvage firm
hopes to be able to raise the
29,000-ton liner in the 60 days
of summer weather during
July and August.

outside his car on the college
campus. Being held was Harry
