The solar batteries in the

still are functioning. A labor

The laboratory said the

Earlier, the laboratory said

A MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Monday, April 7, 1958
Conslance F. I am try
ing to make it up to her.
Mm. C. F. My problem
concerns the happy relation
ship that I have just lost with
my grandchildren.
They are four darlings and
I adore being with them. Re
cently, however, my daugh
ter moved to a new commun
ity and since then I have only
seen them a couple of times.
There was really no reason
for my daughter to have
made this move. She had a
lovely home, convenient to
her husband's office, right
near me. My daughter has al
ways been irritable and short
tempered with me and I feel
that she resented the fact the
children were so crazy about
me.
It is heartbreaking that
such bitterness should exist
in child's heart toward her
own mother. My life is now
empty. What have I done to
deserve this?
Constancy F My mother
has always been the possess
ive type. I have been telling
her this for years, but she
just doesn't seem to under
stand. Of course I love my mother
and I don't resent the chil
dren's love for her, but I do
think they could use a little
less of her. I can't help see
ing that they prefer her story
telling and gift-giving to my
scrubbing, feeding and oc
casional spanking.
In spite of this I have felt
quite guilty about taking the
children away from m y
mother when she dotes on
them so. She says she has seen
them only a couple of times
since we have moved away,
but she neglects to mention
that those couple of times she
stayed at my home several
days and saw 4he children
constantly. I am trying to
make it up to her.
The Council: This unhappy
situation cannot be remedied
by anything Constance can
do "to make it up" to her
mother. Her guilt is ill-founded.
The real problem here is
not being fully stated. Mrs.
C.F. has obviously invested
too much of herself in these
grandchildren. It will be very
hard for her to face and ac
cept the fact that they should
occupy only a portion of her
life and that she must invest
her time, energy and interest
in other places.
Women who have fully de
voted themselves to family
life for some 25 years natur
ally feel that the world out
side home and family has
little interest for them. It
Js not- until they begin to par
ticipate in that world a little
bit that they realize they can
have other interests. That is
why it is important to start
developing outside interests
and activities while the chil
dren are still young.
It takes courage to enter
a new phase of life and Mrs.
C.F. should realize that she
has shirked the problem until
now. Her plaintive cry, "What
have I done to deserve this?"
indicates that she is heading
down the dangerous path of
self-pity to avoid tackling her
very real problem.
Constance can do better
than punish herself with
guilty feelings about her
mother. She can show her
love by helping her mother
find clubs or community work
