made of 90,000 employees

country people ranging in
age from 20
to 64 years.

per thousand
that for men

The doctors estimated that
the risk of a so-called myocar
dial infarction, or heart at
tack, is increased about 50
per cent by over-weight and
about 70 per cent by high
blood pressure. Taking the
persons studied, by age
groups, one finds that men
between 25 and 34 years of
age had only one case in a
thousand; in the next decade
the incidence was 1.8, in the
next, 5.7, and in the last dec
ade studied, from 55-64,- it
was 11.3 per thousand.
One hundred and thirty-sev
en out of the 207 persons af
fected recovered. Most of the
men were out of work for
from 80 to 100 days. Curious
ly, the men in the two salar
ied groups with the highest
degree of responsibility had
the highest incidence of heart
attacks, or 3.7 per thousand.
Those on the wage roll with
the least responsibility had
an incidence of only 2.3 per
thousand.

Sunday and charged about a
patio crowded with Mexican

minutes before police shot it
to death.

thrusts of the picardos, leap
ed a wooden retaining wall
inside the ring and charged
into a fenced area crowded

of foolishness ideally suited
to television six characters,

of business all round and

curs to me: if we are to have
operas in English, we're going
to have to do something about
the articulation of the girls.
Male singers can be under
stood fairly well, but the gals,
when they're shrilling out
those high notes, might as
well be singing in Swahili.

naire containing 36 items. A
typical question was: Is tuber
culosis of the lungs due to
(1) prolonged exposure to
cold; (2) infection with a
germ; (3) anemia and vitamin
deficiency, or (4) don't you
know? The patients correctly
answered 55 per cent of such
questions.
Then the doctors in the
clinic were interviewed and,
interestingly, they had a ten
dency to underestimate their
patients' knowledge of medi
cine. This had unfortunate re
sults, because the doctors who
thought their patients were
too uneducated medically to
understand what they might
be told were disinclined to
explain either the diagnosis
or the treatment. Only those
doctors who saw that they
were dealing with intelligent
and well-informed patients
tried to explain what the
trouble was, and what should
be done about it.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for' infor
mation or to attempt to diag
nose by- mail.
