"Ants?" I laughed.
"No, I'm serious. The eyes of an ant
focus only on a single blade of grass.
They see the choice part of it. Can you
see that tiny bit?
"No, but you see the wormhole in the
apple. You see the sun and the sky and
the clouds and the trees. And beyond?
There must be Someone to whom we
are the ant. And our eyes are focused
only on this little world."
I stared at him.
"Go on," I said.
"Well, I have pigs in the pig lot. Once
in a while they get out. Once in a while
a star falls. A man can't keep things
under control all the time. Neither can
He."
"He?" I asked.
"There has to be a King. There has
to be a Power and a Glory. There has
to be a Force ..."
The man beside the lily was no phi
losopher. He was a practical man with

tremble. Mostly he speaks of costs and
the weather and the plain things
anyone could understand.
Perhaps he spoke of these things
because of this day. It may have been
that he went out into the morning and
saw beside his heavy boot an ant at
work. Or found a broken piece of fence.
I do not think he would believe, like
the woman I once knew, that the little
hills of the" Bible did truly skip for
joy. Neither would he accept a cold
verdict from science. The true scientist,
the true man knows that science, too,
is the anthill.
There has to be a King, larger than
man to whom the infinite is beyond
recognition. There has to be a Being
who makes the earth move and the sun
rise and the moon slim as a maiden
and heavy with promise.
And we are the ants beneath His feet
and whose vision cannot perceive a
single part of Him.
Yet our souls are far mightier than
this finite world.
He has granted us the precious
right of faith.
