Is always interesting to us on
this side of the border, be
cause we feel we have more
in common with the Cana
dians than with any other
people.
The results of Monday's
Canadian election are more
than usually interesting to us
because they may provide a
preview of what will happen
to us thi3 coming November.

IN Canada, as down here,
they have a recession.
In Canada, as on this jfde,
the recession was the BIG
political issue. The campaign
revolved around WHO IS TO
BLAME FOR THE SLUMP
the Liberals, who had been in
power for 22 years up to last
June, or the Conservatives
who came into power ' then
and have been running things
since.
Both parties put forth pro
erams to fix things up. The
Liberals proposed tax cuts of
as much as 400 million dol
lars aimed at stimulating con
sumer spending.
The Conservatives, who
came to a rather shaky seat
of power last June and were
seekine to firm up their con
trol, called for a mammoth
tmblic works program as the
thine needed to turn the
trick.
mHE voters settled it. They
-- went lor tne conservative s
program of big public works.
They went for it in a big way.
Before Monday's election,
the Conservatives had only
113 of the 265 seats in the
Canadian house of commons
20 less than a majority.
They came out of the Donney
brook with 205 seats.
The once powerful Liberals
came out of it with only 47
seats.
ON this side of the border,
as you will probably note,
the program of the Eisenhow
er administration runs more
or less in the same direction
ai the program of the Can
adian Liberal party. The Dem
ocrats down here are more
closely in line with the pro
gram of the Canadian Con
servatives that is, govern
ment spending in a large
way. " " "" ' "
The result of the Canadian
election will probably c o n
firm the Democrats in their
belief that big government
spending is the political an
swer It will probably shake
the confidence in the Eisen
hower administration's wait-and-see
policy.
Votes, after all, are what it
takes to win elections.
A WORD of explanation as
to party names is prob
ably in order here. In these
modern days, party names
mean little or nothing. The
modern Canadian Conserva
tive party is far less conser
vative than the Canadian Lib
eral party.
The Canadian Liberal party
is far less "liberal" in the
sense of being liberal with
the taxpayers' money than
the Conservatives.
On the face of it, the Can
adian election looks like a
turn toward the left in the
sense that "leftists" tend gen
erally toward heavy depend
ence on Big Government.
THAT isn't true.
In Monday's election in
Canada, there were four par
ties the Liberals and the
Conservatives on one side of
the fence and the Social Cred
it party and the Socialist Co
operative Commonwealth fed
eration on the other. The Lib
erals and the Conservatives
are middle-of-the-rcaders. The
other two parties were well
over on the leftist side.
The Socialist-leaning par
ties took a terrible licking.
One of them disappeared en
tirely, losing all its former
seats. The other dropped from
26 seats to eight.
The Indian on Chicago's
seal represents the discoverer
of the city's site and is indica
tive of his contributions to
the city's history.
