Wasco Rancher -Named
To State
Road Commission

Fridley, 46-year-old Wasco
rancher, was appointed to the
State Highway Commission
Wednesday by Gov. Robert
D. Holmes.
Fridley, who operates a
1500-acre wheat, grass and
livestock ranch in Sherman
county, succeeds Charles H.
Reynolds, La Grande. The
new commissioner joins Rob
ert Chessman, .Astoria, and
M. K. Mclver, Portland, on
the commission. Reynolds'
three-year term expired Mon
day, "I am a firm believer,"
Fridley said, "in maximum
development and utilization .
of our water potential pow
er and transportation and
in the maximum development
of highways which would
serve as feeders."
Linfield Graduate
A. native of Wasco, where
he was born Nov. 5, 1912,
Fridley is . a . past president
of the Oregon Wheat Grow
ers league. He is a graduate
of Linfield college. He is a
vice president of the Colum
bia River Development as
sociation and general man
ager of the newly organized
Columbia Ports Traffic Bu
reau at The Dalles.
The new commissioner is a
member of a pioneer Oregon
family. His great grandfather,
Jacob Fridley, came to Ore
gon from Ohio in 1845 to
homestead on the present site
of Oregon State college in
Corvallis. His grandfather,
George C. Fridley, homestead
ed in Sherman county in
1883.
Fridley, also active in poli
tics, is a former chairman of
the Sherman County Demo
cratic Central Committee.
Train Derailed
In Collision
Lodi, Ohio (lit The Balti

Limited, bound for Chicago
from Washington at a 75-mile
an hour clip, was derailed
earlv today when it was ram
med by a tractor-trailer load- j
ed with coal at a crossing
near here.
The truck driver, a passen
ger, and 10 persons aboard
the train were injured. Seven
of the 200 train passengers
were treated at the scene
while three others were treat
ed at Lodi hospital and re
leased. James Burt, 21, LaGrange,
Ohio, driver of the coal truck,
was admitted to Lodi hospi
tal with possible internal in
juries and severe head injur
ies. He was listed in serious
condition.
Among the passengers was
Fran Allison, of the Kukla,
Fran and Ollie TV puppet
show. She was due to appear
on a show in Chicago this
morning.
The impact of the derail
ment tore up a half mile of
tracks as the cars jack-knifed
to the side of the line. A
length of steel rail was driven
up through one of the 11 pull
man cars, missing a sleeping
passenger by a foot.
All of the train passengers,
including the injured, were
taken to Willard, Ohio, for
transfer to another train
bound for Chicago.
'Flying Watchmaker
In Rio De Janeiro

Gluckman, San Francisco's
"flying watchmaker," arrived
here Wednesday in the single
engined plane in which he
hopes to fly by way of Africa
to London.
Gluckman plans, with the
aid of extra gas tanks, to fly
his Bonanza plane direct from
London to New York on the
return trip.
