Larry F. My wife wants
me to go to college.
Linda F. He is rude to
my friends.
Larry F. My wife and I
have been unhappily married
for two years and are just
about ready to call it quits.
- We had been going togeth
er off and on for about ten
years since our high school
years. We got along just fine
as friends, but as soon as we
started to consider marriage
all kinds of disagreements
arose. Linda doesn't like the
work I do and wants me to
go to college nights to "bet
ter" myself. I think that's
silly as I earn a good living
as a salesman and I don't see
how college would help me.
I never did like most of
Linda's friends and she didn't
care for mine. We agreed that
we'd have our separate
friends-, but this doesn't seem
to work out.
Linda F. Larry and I
agreed that if our marriage
didn't work out after two
years, we would separate. It
hasn't seemed to work out,
yet I find that I am lonely
when I am not with him and
dread being alone now that
all my friends are married.
I don't feel that Larry has
tried to meet me halfway.
I've tried very hard to please
him by keeping a nice home
and being affectionate and
considerate. But I don't see
that he does anything to please
me. He knows how much I
want him to go to college, but
he is so stubborn about it.

cept Larry's friends if he
would be decent and cour
teous to mine, but he seems
to be deliberately rude.
The Council: The basic
trouble with this marriage is
that neither party ever ac
cepted it as a real marriage.
According to Linda's state
ment, it was a "trial mar
riage" from the beginning.
A big factor in the success
of any marriage is the definite
commitment of the two part
ners to a lifetime pledge. Even
if the partners' religion per
mits divorce, a marriage made
in good faith is one in which
two persons made a profound
commitment. If the commit
ment is insincere or half
hearted, there are at least
two strikes against the mar
riage. Despite Linda's claim to
great effort to make a go of
things, we are not impressed.
Linda shows that she is not
prepared to love her husband
as he is, but wishes to turn
him into something else.
No adult can go through
the long, rather grueling ex
perience of working days and
going to college at night
without a strong desire to do
so. Encouragement from a
mate can be helpful to some
one with real ambitions in
this direction, but pressure is
another story. Larry cannot
possibly go through college
on Linda's steam.
The question of friends is
probably closely tied up with
this issue. Linda has certain
social ambitions her husband
does not share. If she values
her marriage, she'll com- j

together in many ways, in
spite of all their conflicts.
They need to find the areas
that bind them and build
from there, dealing honestly
and gently with the areas of
conflict.
