Is That
By EUGENE BURNS
Ranger-Naturalist
Knowing "which way is
up" is a much more compli
cated operation than most of
us realize. For example, how
does a floating fish in the in
tense darkness of the ocean
deep know this? Or man,
when confined within a light
sealed tilted room?
The answer to this balance
like within the tiny inner ear.
It's like this. All animals
with a backbone from the
shark, lowest of these verte
brates, to man, the highest
have set of semi-circular can
als in the head partly filled
with a watery liquid.
In these liquid-filled canals
are tiny hairs which bend eas
ily in the direction the liquid
flows when the head is tilted.
To the base of these hairs are
attached tiny nerves which tie
in with the eighth of the 10
or 12 major nerves all ani
mals have in their heads, and
this large nerve leads directly
to the brain.
Now then, when the head is
tilted, the fluid within these
three semicircular canals in
the inner ear flows in that di
rection, bending the hairs,
and quick as a flash the nerve
ends hurry the information of
unbalance to the brain where
appropriate actionals taken.
Should a person make sev
eral rapid turns, going 'round
and 'round, the fluid within
the canals would tend to keep
going just, as it would in
turning a bucket of water
and thus these tiny hair cells
would continue to be stimu
lated and keep the person off-
balance. In short, dizzy.
