The Woman of 80 Years Who
Is a Problem lo Her Children
A well-to-do man was just
in to tell me his troubles. He
has a strong-willed old moth
er of 80 who
has him puz

the old family
mansion, but
this worries
her children.
Once she had
a little stroke
Dr. Alvarez that left her
lying on the floor for two
days, until the milk man
heard her groaning, and broke
in. The son gets her a nurse,
or a companion or a cook, and
next day his mother fires the
woman.
For a while he tried keep
ing his mother in an expen
sive rest-home, but at times
the old lady would get a bit
confused mentally so that she
would ramble into the rooms
of other patients and order
them "to take their junk and
move out." Naturally, next
day-the manager of the nursing-home
asked the son to
take his mother elsewhere.
Then he put his mother in an
ordinary hospital, but soon
she said that was no place for
her, and stormed out. The
head nurse thought the old
lady ought to be in a mental
hospital but the son could not
bring himself to commit his
mother. And yet, he saw at

committed, he could have no
control over her, not even for
24 hours.
It Didn't Work
Then, one of the woman's
married daughters said she
would try to take care of the
old mother in her home, but
this didn't work; again, be
cause the woman had hours
when she was mentally con
fused and not sure who the
people around her were. One
night, at two in the morning,
she discovered "a burglar,"
her son-in-law, in a room and
ordered him out of the place.
Commonly, at night, she ram
bled about the house from
room to room, turning on all
the lights and waking every
one. Obviously, even if the
daughter's nervous system
could have stood the strain,
the nervous systems of the
husband and the children
couldn't "take it." So that ex
periment failed.
In several of these cases
that I know of, the old lady
has won out, and is now liv
ing all alone as a recluse in
the big old home. She got her
way by wearing her children
down. And perhaps her way
is best. It is true that some
day she may drop dead and
lie on the floor for a few
days until found but that
would not be such a terrible
tragedy. If she much prefers
to run that risk, I think her
children should leave her
alone.
