The Family Council

Each article is a summary of an actual report. The Family Council does
not give advice: it merely reports on problems that have been dealt
with by responsible agencies and counselors.
Helen A. I don't think I
really love him.
Gerald D. She can't leave
me high and dry.
Helen A. I have gotten
myself into one terrible mess
and I don't know how to find
my way out.
Two years ago I fell in love
with one of the married men
working in my office. We
went oyt on a few dates and
then became intimate. He told
me he was very unhappy with
his wife and he finally left
her and we went to live to
gether. At last his wife agreed to a
divorce and things should be--come
final very soon. But now
Jerry and I don't know wheth
er we want to get married.
We have not gotten along well
and I am beginning to see that
I don't really love him. But
everyone says I'd be a fool if
I didn't marry him for the
sake of my own reputation.
Gerald D. I left my wife
and baby for Helen's sake and
now she talks about walking
out and leaving me high and
dry- She tells me to go back
to my wife. But my wife has
found someone else and does
n't want me any more.
It's true that Helen and I
have fought like cats and
dogs, but I think that's be
cause we've been so nervous
not knowing whether or not
the divorce was going through
and what our status was going
to be. Once we are really man
and wife things will straight
en out.
The way things are now,
everyone knows what happen
ed and blames me for the way
I treated my wife. If Helen
and I don't get married I'll
be blamed even more and
we'll both be laughing stocks.
The Council: Helen and
Gerald seem to have gotten
the grotesque notion that their
decision to marry or not mar
ry runs a close second to
Sputnik in the public's inter
est. In reality, it is doubtful
whether anyone outside of
I Helen's family cares whether
not she marries Gerald.

It is most unlikely that the
'breakup of the relationship

stock" of anyone. The few per
sons "in the know" can find
funnier stories on TV.
Gerald is also overly con
cerned about being left "high
and dry." If he tries, he can
doubtless find another woman
foolish enough to become in
volved with him.
That leaves this childish,
self - seeking pair without
much reason for getting mar
ried. By their own admission
they merely wish to use each
other for temporary expedi
ency. ,
The question of whether or
not they can ever find a
worthwhile relationship and a
decent life still rests with
them. This depends on wheth
er or not they are ready to
make drastic changes in their
outlook, their view of mar
riage, their view of each oth
er. They would have to learn
to think in terms of contribut
ing to another's happiness and
of building a lasting, mean
ingful relationship.
They badly need guidance
toward that end from a clergy
man or trained social worker.

NEWS
Central Point Sparkplugs
The Central Point Spark
plugs tractor club met at the
Valley Equipment company,
Highway 99, Feb. 22. Mem
bers discussed the window dis
play for national 4-H week on
March 1 through 8, which
will be in the Alexander
Hardware in Central Point.
An equipment company
representative talked about
batteries and transmissions
on tractors.
The next meeting will be
held March 15 at Bob Kuest's
home on Beall lane.

Car Minus Wheels, Propelled by Fans, Predicted in Future

row with no wheels isn't
far off.
Carl Reynolds, who played
a major role in the design of
automobile tail fins, said the
"wheelless" car could be built
now, but only on an experi
mental basis.
Reynolds said the car
would be propelled by ducted
fans and would glide along
about two feet above the
ground. It could climb to al
titudes of 100 feet but he said
this would have to be con
trolled to prevent "hedge
hopping." "In 20 years people will be
riding in the wheelless car,"
he said. "Safety will no lon
ger depend on tire wear and
road surface conditions."
The car would be construct
ed of a durable, alloy-like
magnesium of aluminum
which will allow a small light
weight turbine engine to be
used. The car will be much
larger than today's models
and the tail section will sweep
back following an aerody
namic shape.
No Flight of Fancy
Reynolds gave his predic
tion of the future at a meet
ing of some 100 of the nation's
leading product designers.
The occasion was the three
day Industrial Designers In
stitute national conference.
He reminded listeners that

Turbine engines have been
used to run cars before, .al
though only on an expeimen
tal basis. Reynolds said simi
lar turbine engines will be
used in a system with ducted
fans to generate gas pressures
that will be directed to pro
pelling the car, steering it and
braking it.
Automatic Steering
Traffic safety will take a
giant stride forward with the
wheelless car, he explained.
"Upon limited access high
ways for inter-city travel,
electronic devices, perhaps in
volving a 'guide beam' or ra
diation system, will provide
automatic steering and speed
control."
For people who have park
ing problems, the wheelless
car will put the convenience
of power steering in the back
seat. The wheelless car will
be able to operate sideways,
making parking easier.
And Reynolds says that if
you are thinking of a trip to
Europe that also can be ar
ranged with the wheelless car.
He said he could drive over
calm water and theoretically
fly the Atlantic, barring se
vere up and down drafts.
"But you'd have to have a
good navigator aboard," he
added. "
