stallation of the first of four
90,000 kilowatt turbines at
Idaho Power Company's
Brownlee dam on the Snake
river was announced Wednes
day by company officials.
A company spokesman said
the turbine installation was
being pushed on a round-the-clock
schedule to have the
. generating unit ready for op
eration by August, the dead
line for Brownlee's first oper
ation. The dam's initial capac
ity is 360,000 - kilowatts of i
power.
Idaho Power also announced
that the entire project was
now 80 per cent complete.
Construction of the dam's
rock-fill embankment is vir
tually finished, the company
said.
Holmes To Return
To Oregon Today

Gov. Robert D. Holmes was
due back in Oregon today
after attending the Western
States Gpvernors' Conference
in Colorado Springs.
Gov. Holmes planned to
leave here by airplane this
morning and was due to ar
rive at the Portland Interna
tional Airport at 2:25 p.m.
Gov. Robert E. Smylie of
Idaho has been named chair
man of the 1959 Western
States Governors' Conference.
He succeeds Gov. Steve Mc
Nichols of Colorado, host gov
ernor at this year's " conference.
Alaska Man Waives
Preliminary Hearing
Albert Hubert Laessig, 33,
Mountain View, Alaska, waiv
ed preliminary hearing in dis
trict court Wednesday and
was bound over to the' grand
jury on a charge of obtaining
money under false pretenses.
He is confined to the county
jail.
Laessig was arrested by
Medford police Tuesday in
connection with bad check
charges, police said.
Robbers Have Short
Freedom After Crime
Portland (IP) Police ar
rested two suspects Tuesday
night 20 "minutes after $1154
was taken from a southwest
Portland Safeway store at
gunpoint.
The suspects were identi
fied as David Lynn Thurston,
28, Sacramento, and. Walter
L. Leonard, alias Walter Kops
land, 26, Auburn, Wash. The
loot was recovered.
PUZZLING CASE
Atlanta (ITS Police took
a special interest today in
trvinp to solve the theft of a
hand truck. It was taken from
the basement of police head
quarters.
