Kansas State and San Fran
cisco waltzed into the NCAA
Basketball tournament today
while Duke paid the price for
underestimating one of its
lowly "cousins' in the Atlan
tic Coast conference.
Led by big Bob Boozer's 23
points, top-ranked Kansas
State clinched the Big Eight
conference championship
Tuesday night by whipping
Oklahoma. 68-51. and the
third-ranked Dons wrapped up
the West Coast conference
crown by sneaking past St.
Mary's, Calif., 49-47.

games from Eagle Pointers
Tuesday.
The Hornet ninth won 48
to 40 over an improved Eagle
Point club. Eighth grade re
sult was 34 to 15 reversing
a previous outcome and sev
enth grade score was 44 to
17.
Eagle Point led 13 to 10
at the quarter of the ninth
grade mix but Hedrick was
on top 26 to 17 at the half
and 25 to 27 after three quar
ters. Bob Mclntyre of Hed
rick and Tex Perdue of Eagle
Point each had 12 points.
The Hornet eighth had 9
to 3, 15 to 7 and 16 to 12 per
iod leads and broke away in
the final quarter. David Ir
ving paced the win with 15
points. Seventh grade quar
ter gaps were 19 to 5, 30 to

high 65-50 in a Metro league
basketball game. Astoria earl

North Carolina Friday night,
dropped a 70-68 verdict to
Virginia in the third overtime
period. It was one of the sea

J vented Duke from clinching
at least a share of the ACC
regular-season championship.
The Blue Devils and North
Carolina will carry identical
10-3 conference records into
Friday's showdown at Chapel
Hill, N.C., but the winner will
not move into the NCAA
championship. The ACC rep
resentative will be deter
mined next week in a post

The University of San Fran
cisco Dons proudly hailed
their fourth straight West
Coast Athletic conference bas
ketball title today but a few
growling St. Mary's fans still
maintained that it was handed
to them.
For a while Tuesday night,
it looked like the Dons might
have to wait awhile before
they could pick up their tick
et to the NCAA regional play
offs next month. St. Mary's
outplayed the fourth-ranked
Dons throughout the first
half and was holding its own
in the second when two of
the Gaels' top stars were
thumbed out on fouls. USF
won, 49-47, and the officials
had to be escorted through
the Gael fans by police.
Dons Trail at Half
The Dons trailed at half-
time, 26-23, for the first time
since before Christmas. It was
their 18th straight victory
and 21st in 22 games. Art Day
led the attack with 20 points,
while Dick Sigaty of St.
Mary's, the league's top scor
er was held to 10.
San Jose State ruined Santa
Clara's hopes for a second
place tie with St. Mary's by
defeating the Broncs, 54-40,
The Spartans led from start
to finish behind the sharp-
sftooting of Eddie Diaz, who
scored 19 points. Jim Taylor
led the Broncs with 11.
Meanwhile Chico State
moved into the District 8
NCAA small college tourna
ment by defeating the Uni
versity of Nevada, 59-54. It
was the Wildcats' first win
over Nevada in four tries this
season.
The two teams finished the
Far Western Conference sea
son in a first place tie and
held the playoff to determine
the FWC's entry in the tourney.

Willie Pastrano
Takes Decision
London (IP) Willie Pas-
trano's second fight in Eng
land wasn't as impressive
as his first, but the third-
ranked heavyweight from
New Orleans isn't turning his
back on the British Isles.
Pastrano scored an unpop
ular 10-round decision over
Brian London Tuesday night
before an estimated 10,000
fans, who booed referee Bill
Williams' verdict and tossed
empty beer cans and coins
into the ring at Harringay
Arena.
The Louisiana boxer had
beaten Dick Richardson of
Wales in the same ring only
four months ago, but London
turned out to be a much
tougher opponent. The son of
former British heavyweight
champion Jack London trad
ed blows with Pastrano
throughout the bout and his
followers felt he deserved at
least a draw.
London suffered the first
knockdown of his career in
the fifth round when Pastrano
landed a hard right to the
body. However, the referee
called it a low blow and stop
ped the fight to warn Pas
trano to "keep 'em up."
It was the second time
Williams had halted the ac-
tion to admonish Pastrano
about using unfair tactics. In
the fourth round, he caution
ed the Yank to "keep your
head up" and to "stop butting."

Maybe it's a little too early
for predictions, but a half a
dozen or so youngsters al
ready are kicking up then
heels in the various major
league training camps.
The New York Yankees,
forerunners of the instruction
al school, "graduated" four
farm hands Tuesday, and as
usual Manager Casey Stengel
got in a few hundred well
chosen words of praise
each.
Picked to train with the
varsity after catching Steng
el's eye were outfielder Der
on Johnson, pitchers Zack
Monroe and Johnny James
and Billy Johnson. Deron
Johnson, only 19, impressed
while working out at third
base where he is expected to
see a lot of action during the
training phase ahead.
, "Look at the way he gets
the job done out there," Cas
ey beamed. "He charges the
ball and it just seems to run
into his hands. You can bet
one thing, he's going to get
a chance."
Played With Binghamton
Deron Johnson moved up
to Binghamton in the Eastern
league last year after a fine
first year in organized ball
at Kearney, in the Class D
Nebraska' State league in
1956.
James was at Richmond in
the International league last
year, while Monroe played at
Denver in the American as
sociation. Meanwhile, only a couple
miles away in the St. Louis
Cardinals' training camp at
St. Petersburg, General Man
ager Bing Devine was beat
ing the drums for "kid" pitch
ers Billy .Muffett, who was
with the club last season, and
rookie reliever Phil Clark,
who won 16 games for Hou
ston in the Texas league last
year. Muffett had a 3-2 rec
ord in 1957.
The Chicago White Sox,
who are looking for long ball
hitters to back up their
"class" pitching staff, think
they may have found a good
prospect in 18-year-old out
fielder John Callison, up
from Bakersfield in the Class
C California league. Callison
had Manager Al Lopez beam
ing when he belted a couple
of 400-foot homers during a
on workout at Tampa.
Two other rookies, catcher
Camilo Carreon and first base
man Donald Mincher, also
showed Lopez strong poten
tial, particularly Carreqn who
hit two balls over the left
field fence at the Sox' train
ing base in Tampa.
