bered in the millions.-
Chipmunks, those inquisi
tive little creatures, do not
live in trees. These pert,
friendly little animals live in
sizable family groups under
ground or in stone walls,
rocks or fallen timber.
Flying squirrels exist in al
most all parts of the northern
hemisphere where there are
trees. They are seldom seen
because they are nocturnal.
To help them see in dim light,
their eyes are unusually
large.
Tactile Sense Organs
The pocket gopher which
spends almost its entire life
underground in total dark
ness can run backward as fast
and as easily as it can for
ward. For this backward
travel, its fleshy tail is en
dowed with tactile sense or
gants enabling it to feel its
way underground in the dark
ness. The smallest rodent in the
North American continent is
the Pacific pocket mouse. Ful
ly grown it weighs one-third
of an ounce. It can go for
months without water just
like the kangaroo rat of the
warm dry parts of western
North America getting all
