Ragweed Hay Fever
I was just reading where
my friends, Drs. C. F. Lake,
G. B. Logan and G. A. Peters,
of the Mayo
Clinic, report
the treatment
of r a g w eed
hay fever
with powder
ed hydrocor
tisone blown
into the nose.
This had been
tried before
by a number
Dr. Alvarez
of physicians, some of whom
said that the treatment had
kept most of their patients
comfortable during the hay
fever season. The Mayo phy
sicians treated 18 patients
three children and 15 adults.
These persons used an inhal
ant type of powder dispenser
three or four times a day.
The children received a daily
dose of 5 mgs. and the adults
got 15 mgs. Six of the pa
tients received marked relief,
and had an excellent result;
eight had a good result, in
that they didn't have much
distress; and three had only
a fair result, with their symp
toms helped about 50 per
cent. One patient said she was
worse.

unlock most of their doors.
This makes the patients so
much happier. Gorman com
ments favorably, also, on the
work of the Topeka State
Hospital, the physicians of
which spend part of their
time seeing patients in their
homes, or in boarding-houses.
Gorman approves of the new
way in which patients are
now kept in a mental hospital
only during the day or during
the night. This, often enables
the person who is only slight
ly disturbed as so many are
to keep at work, to earn
his living, and to be often
with his family. This type of
care is of great help, also,
to the patient who has recent
ly been discharged from a
mental hospital, but still feels
a bit shaky and unsure of
himself. Gorman speaks of
the "half-way house" type of
institution.
Another good move is the
caring for more and more j
mildly psychotic patients in 1
general hospitals. This keeps
them under the care of their j
family doctors: it keeps them !
near their family and it takes
away the old stigma the pa
tient has good reason to dread
when he has been in a mental
hospital.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag
nose by mail.

the amount of time spent in

do this without increasing
school appropriations which
take 40 per cent of the record
two billion dollar budget he

ment of radically new and
costly defenses that we dem
onstrate we can do a better
job with the very substantial
amounts we are presently ex
pending for education before
we go to the well for more,"
the Republican governor said.
Knight said he hoped a spe
cial legislative session could
"put meat on the bones of
our education structure" by
increasing the minimum re
quirements in high schools
for reading, writing, language
study, arithmetic and civics.
"The program I have out
lined is one I hope will result
in long range improvement,"
Knight said. "It is not a crash
program designed to meet a
temporary need."

suddenly too late for the
amenities of prolonged con
versation and endless confer

Shore television show Sunday
on the advice of her. doctor,
according to NBC network
officials.
The cancellation was an
nounced Friday after Miss Da
vis's doctor said the actress
had been going through stren
uous rehearsals this week and
had suffered a recurrence of
symptoms of a back injury
suffered last year.
Network officials said ac
