    Delany Scores 21 st Indoor
Mile Win in MU Meeting
By OSCAR FRALEY
United Presi Sorts Writer
New York OP) Late
charging Ron Delany scored
his 21st straight indoor mile
triumph Saturday night when
he ran Hungary's Istvan Roz
savolgyi into the boards with
two laps to go in four min
utes, 3.7 seconds in the na
tional AAU championships at
Madison Square Garden.
Missing Gunnar Nielsen's
three-vear-old world indoor
record bv only one-tenth of a
second, the Irish whippet
from Villanova became the
first man to win three straight
AAU miles indoors as he
sprinted home 15 yards in
front of Rozsavolgyi. Jim
Grelle of the University of
Oregon was third.
Rozsavoleyi thrilled a
crowd of 13.500 as he sprint
ed into the lead with two
laDs to ea. and bolted 10 yards
in front. But Delany overtook
him with a brilliant burst of
speed, roared into the head
with one lap to go and never
was threatened from there on
in.

Golf Final
Ormond Beach, Fla. rtfl
Judy Bell, 21-year-old Wichi
ta, Kan., golfer, met a last
ditch challenge by veteran
Marge Burns Saturday to win
the South Atlantic Women's
Amateur tournament 1-up in
37 holes.
The shapely Miss Bell had
taken a four-up lead after the
first 18 holes before her Sao
ramento, Calif., opponent
started a winning streak that
saw her take all but three of
the second 18 holes.
The new champion, taking
advantage of putting lapses
by Miss Burns, jumped to a
quick lead in the morning
round. The two players were
even after nine holes, but
Miss Bell won four holes on
the back side to take a four
up advantage.

Tourney Berths Near
Completion Saturday
By FRANK LITSKY
The men who pick the
teams for the NCAA and Na
tional Invitation Basketball
tournaments found their task
half completed Saturday with
the NCAA getting most of the
prize plums. -
At the start of the day, the
Invitation tourney in New
York had lined up six of its
12 teams, the latest acceptance
coming from St. John's of
Brooklyn (12-6). The NCAA
tournament, . which added
Temple (20-2) and Manhattan
(11-8) Friday night, had seven
of its 24 teams.
Actually, the NCAA also
reached the .500 mark be
cause it had filled four of Us
eight "at large" berths. The
16 other teams are conference
representatives who qualify
automatically. Three of the 16
have been chosen with a host
of nationally ranked powers
still to come.
The Invitation tournament
was hot after Temple, which
sports -an 18-game' winning
streak, longest in the country.
The Owls, ranked sixth by the
United Press Board of Coach
es, got the NCAA nod from
the Middle Atlantic confer
ence. Temple accepted after
being assured that its three
Negro players would receive
equal treatment during the
regional playoffs at Charlotte,
N.C.
Conference representatives
already in the NCAA tourney,
in adition to Temple, are Con
necticut Yankee and Idaho
State Rocky oMuntain. "At
large" teams are Manhattan,
Oklahoma State,, Notre Dame
and Pittsburgh, all coveted
by the New York tournament
sponsors.
The field for the Invitation
tourney includes St. John's,
Fordham, St. Peter's, N.J., St.
Bonaventure, Niagara and
Dayton.
Things will get even live
lier for the NCAA competition
because aKnsas State, West
Virginia, Cincinnati and San
Francisco are favored to win
conference titles which will
qualify them for the national
tournament. Those teams
stand 1-2-3-4 in the United
Press ratings.
