For those who enjoy the music from
Broadway shows, two excellent
albums are now available.
For a current smash hit, listen to
"Jamaica," RCA's release with Lena
Home, Ricardo Montalban, and the
rest of the original cast. The second
package, from Columbia, is "The Four
Lads Sing Frank Loesser." We think
you'll like the "Guys and Dolls" bit on
this one.
TOPS ON THE RECORD SHELVES:
For the first time in the history of LPs,
a firm has simultaneously .introduced
two new albums by the same group,
and after listening to both, we think
you'll understand why Audio Fidelity
did this. The disks are called "On Bour
bon Street with the Dukes of Dixie
land" and "Minstrel Time with the
Dukes of Dixieland." This is a real
swinging group, one which both jazz
and pop fans will find to their liking.
MUSIC FOR FAMILY LISTENING:
For a varied program of fine vocal
music, let's start off with "It's All Over
But the Swinging," a Decca release
spotlighting Sammy Davis Jr. On the
same label, "Songs of Love" by Sylvia
Syms should find a wide audience
among teens as well as the adults.
Those who like a continental flavor in
their musical julep might try "Paris
Midnight," a Vanguard LP with Liane
singing some fine tunes from the French
capital. "Dalida" is the title of another
album and the name of the singer who
offers a most unusual voice. It's on
Verve and it, too, comes from Paris.
"Man, I Flipped" is a Cadence present
featuring the fine Kirby Stone group.
While in a mood for a real beat, try
Hifi Record's "Harp with a Beat" by
Verlye Mills. In a more sedate atmos
phere is Disneyland's "Autumn" by
Camarata and his musical invention
which includes a pipe organ, piano,
chorus, and full orchestra. Finally, from"
Chicago's famous Pump Room come the
danceable tunes of David Le Winter
and his orchestra, on Mercury.
COVERING THE CLASSICS: For
those who know and love opera, yet
are unable to get to the centers where
it is performed, Angel has added an
other fine complete recording. It's the
La Scala company with Maria Callas
performing "Turandot," and you can be
assured a full evening's enjoyment
when you spin this Puccini classic.
Antonio Vivaldi's "The Four Sea
sons," the four-part concerto which has
achieved great renown since it was
composed in the early 18th century,
receives a moving performance on Van
guard's new LP featuring Jan Tomasow
on violin and Anton Heiller, harpsi
chordist. Vladimir Horowitz sets his
nimble fingers to the keyboard, and the
result is an RCA gem called "Horowitz
Plays Chopin." Also newly released is
Chopin's "Ballades and Impromptus"
as performed by another fine pianist,
Agi Jambor, on Capitol.
JAZZOMANIA: There is quite a vari
ety of good new jazz now available,
and for a sampling try "Hard Drive"
with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, on
Bethlehem. It's probably the best effort
by this group to date. "West Side
Story" is one of this season's big Broad
way hits, and the Leonard Bernstein
score gets a top jazz treatment from
Manny Albam and his group in a Coral
waxing which should find wide accept
ance among collectors.
One of the most famous jazz concerts
was played in December, 1956, in Paris
and starred the ageless musicianship of
Kid Ory. Now Verve has released this
performance for all to hear and enjoy.
On the same label is the latest etching
by Woody Herman and his Herd, this
one called "Early Autumn" and offer
ing some excellent listening. "All the
King's Saxes" marks the debut of
Disneyland Records on the jazz scene,
and an auspicious start it is, with Hymie
Shertzer conducting a group of finished
musicians in a swinging, bouncing set
you won't want to miss.
HI-FI FUN: Want to demonstrate your
high-fidelity equipment with some ex
citing musical sounds? Then try one or
all of these recent LPs: "Hi-Fi Salute
to Bunny," with Ruby Braff on RCA;
"Jimmie Lunceford in Hi-Fi," starring
Sy Oliver on Decca; and "Getz Meets
Mulligan in Hi-Fi," via Verve.
