Three men on a hook: it takes the combined strength of these husky fishermen to lift a fighting 125-pound tuna from sea to shipboard.
when the tuna strike
Photos: Evans from Three Lions
A voice rises above the ocean roar "Atun!" A school
of tuna has been spotted, and the tuna
clipper comes alive with rugged men ready to
do battle with fish weighing up to 400 pounds. The
men scamper into the ship's narrow ramps which dip
into the swelling sea, then rise high above the water.
Bamboo poles, sometimes three to one hook, are readied.
Sardines are dumped overboard to lure the tuna to the
feathered hooks. There is an anxious wait. Then the
tuna strike. Here are the moments of high
adventure and backbreaking work that follow.
