linquency problems in Amer
ica, says New Orleans city
Judge Anna Levy. She is vis
iting Hollywood to supervise
filming of a television show
based on an experience in her
life.
"I served for eight years on
the bench of the Juvenile
Court, I am currently in Civil
Court," Mrs. Levy explained.
"During that time I tried
more than 30,000 cases involv
ing children and their parents.
And I came to one conclusion:
No children are alike. No par
ents are alike. And punishing
any of them is useless."
Judge Levy agrees there is
more juvenile delinquency in
this country today than ever
before. She says it is easily
explained:
"There is more pressure on
the population in general. Un-

unfailing forgiveness on the
part of the children.
It is a frightening responsi
bility," she pointed out, "to
have a child's life and future
m your hands by the judg
ment you hand down. Only in
the rarest instances have I
ever felt that a child should
be taken from its natural par
ents. For the youngster in
variably wants his own moth
er and father, notwithstand
ing whether the feeling is
mutual."

L-C Choir
Coming
Stanley Glarura, well
known choral composer and
arranger,' will direct the 60
voice a cappella choir of Lew
is and Clark College of Port
land in concert on Sunday,
March 9 at 7:30 p.m. at First
Presbyterian church, Med
ford. This is Mr. Glarum's elev
enth year as director of the
choir, which in nine years of
touring Oregon, Washington,
California and Idaho has
built a solid reputation as a
choral group. This year the
choir makes its first appear
ances in Nevada and Utah.
The choir presents a well
balanced program .of choral
literature, varying from plain
song to contemporary har
monies and from sacred to
humorous moods.
Mr. Glarum's choral com
positions are used by school
and church choirs throughout
the country. Some of his re
cent compositions will be fea
tured on the program.
The group is regarded as
comparing favorably with the
best choirs in the nation.
Women Golfers
To Open Season
Dr. Clifford Miller, assist
ant professor of social science
at Southern Oregon college
spoke at the Thursday even
ing dessert meeting of Med
ford Business and Profession
al Women's club. The meet
ing was held at Girls Com
munity club.
Dr. Miller spoke on the
"Middle Eas,t." He gave rea
sons why the United States
was interested in this part of
the world and explained what
both the United States and
Russia had accomplished in
that area.
He spoke of the Russian
threat in the Middle East and
concluded by making sugges
tions for the United States'
policy towards this area.
Dr. Miller was introduced
by Mrs. Ivah D. Murry, chair
man of the International Re
lations committee. Mrs. Thel-
ma Mclntyre, chairman of the
National Security committee,
was social chairman.
The tables for the meeting
were decorated for Washing
ton's birthday with red, white,
and blue candles.

Subject of New Treatise

time, figuring out why we

The creator of this latest
analysis is a woman, mind
you an ad agency executive
named Janet Wolff, who has
put her views in s 294-page
treatise called 'What Makes
Women Buy" McGraw-Hill.
"I can answer that one,"
said our office wag, when he
saw the title. "Because it's
OUR pay - checks they're
spending."
But Miss Wolff ' indicates a
little more loving from hus
bands would mean a little less
spending by wives. She says
one of the major factors in
feminine buying is the desire
lor attention.
"Perhaps the greatest emo
tional need of the housewive
is romance," said Miss Wolff,
who has been motivating our
spending through her 16 years
of writing advertising copy.
Hardly Glamorous
"After a few years of mar
riage her life has settled into
a routine which mav be satis
fying in many ways, but is
hardly glamorous," says the
author. "The romantic atten
tions her husband paid her in
their courtship and early mar
ried life are gone.
"Life is . . . more routine.
She feels the need to escape
to bring romance into her
life. Thus, her interests in
soap operas, love stories, ro
mantic novels.
"Products which bring ro
mance into women's daily life
immediately profit." M i s g
Wolff didn't go into what
these were.
The author repeats statist
ics pretty well accepted by
those who have something to
sell whether it's a cake of
soap or a limousine. Women
control the bulk of consumer
spending.
In analyzing why we buy,
she also comes up with some
other interesting comments
on the female species.

On the term "housewife":
Most women tiate the label,
she said. "The term. . . espec
ially in the upper and middle
income groups carries little
prestige, little glamour."
On getting along with other
women: "Most women feel
some rivalry with other wo
men, and keep their, guard
up. . ." She said this rivalry
shows especially in the clothes
department, where " women
"want to be in style, but don't
want a dress or hat exactly
like someone else's. In con
trast, a man. . . feels uncom
fortable if he isn't wearing
what other men are."
On clothes shopping: TJie
chore "creates tensions" in us,
she said. Maybe it's because
of the "heavy" decisions in
volved figuring whether the
outfit is becoming, fashion
able and whether husbands
and friends will approve.
On our sense of humor:
"Women seem to look at life
more seriously than men . . .
to take life and jokes literal
ly as well as personally. Wo
men find it . . . harder to
laugh at themselves."
On how to lessen household
routine: Make the job more
creative and fun. Manufac
turers can help here, she
said, even if it means adding
music to. the machinery.

done. "Possibly," said Miss
Wolff, a "Vacuum cleaner

Gives' Away Salary
Midkiff, W. Va. (IP) Flora
Midkiff, an 80-year-old teach
er here, isn't complaining
about her salary or working
conditions. She has always
"loved the work of teaching
children" and would choose
the same career all over
again.
Mrs. Midkiff, who began
teaching in 1895, donates her
entire salary as a substitute
teacher to "the church or the
needy." She says her first
pay was $18 per month, com
pared to her present $70 a
month salary.
Mrs. Midkiff isn't letting
her age slow her down either.
Her present teaching duties
require her to ride a school
bus ten miles a day to teach
primary grades in a two-room
school.

for the Mardi Gras ball given by Tudor guild of the Oregon
Shakespearean festival February IS at Rogue Valley Country
club. Dr. Aubrey Hill, Ashland, (at left) was one of the
Rangers, and the other was Gordon Serpa. Mrs. Serpa was
garbed as an Indian, adding extra tresses to her alreday
long brunette hair. Both men wore real guns, but neither
could have made a fast draw for they had wired the weapons
to the holsters as a safety measure.

Friday at her home on Beatty
street at a valentine luncheon
and card party. The occasion
was in observance of the
birthdays of Mrs. Harry Buck
master, Mrs. William S.
Sweet, Mrs. Claude Payton
and Mrs. Lack. The luncheon
table was decorated in the
valentine motif and with vio
lets. It was centered with a
decorated birthday cake, the
gift of Mrs. Harry Davis of
Jacksonville, a friend of Mrs.
Lack for over twenty years.
