to defeat the slamming Aus
tralian, Lew Hoad, 2-6, 8-6,
8-6, here at the Arena.
In the opener, Francisco
Segura's deadly placements
carried him to an 8-2 victory
over Tony Trabert in a one
set match before 3,962 fans.
Gonzales had one of the
toughest battles of his career
before he overcame the deter
mined challenger from Down
Under and cut Hoad's lead
to 15-8 in their 100-match
series.
In a fast night cap, Gon
zales and Trabert swamped
Hoad and Segura 8-1, in a
one-set match to wind up
their tour here. They play
next Sunday at Fort Worth,
Texas.

slate. The Dons, fourth-ranked
nationally with a 20-1 rec
ord on the season and an 8-0
mark in conference play, will
be after their 17th straight
victory.

to Loyla and Pepperdine will

Louis. The Hawks need only
two victories in 12 games to
clinch the Western division
title.

Nazarene comes to Ashland
with a 17-7 record so far this
season. The Crusaders hold
victories over Eastern Oregon
which SOC opposes in the
Oregon Collegiate conference.
The Idaho club is a member
of the Intermountain confer
ence. It tied for third in that
loop last year, then won the
District 5 title of the National
Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics.
Crusader record for last
year was 25-9.
Gardner Paces
Leader of the Nazarenes is
Dave Gardner, senior from
Portland who scored 506
points for the Nampa school
last year. Other top players
are Tom Tracy, all-state from
North Dakota, Sam Willard,
Hank Steuckel and Bob Pepp
ley. Coach of the Crusaders is

For the Raiders Coach Ted
Schopf is expected to call on
the regular combination, Dave

Southern Oregon on
Wednesday completed its
league schedule and this week
end's games complete its regu
lar slate for the year. The
Raiders will vie in the NAIA
district tournament with the
hope of gaining the national
tourney.

The blonde Mrs. Porter
eked out a 19-hole decision
over Doris Phillips, Belleville,
111., Thursday to survive the
quarter-finals played in 25
mile -an -hour winds. There
were only three holes won and
lost in the tense battle.
Mrs. Cudone advanced eas
ily with a 6 and 5 win over
Carol Beinbrink, Sunnybrook,
N. Y. Miss Bell was carried to
the final hole to beat Greta
Leone, Chicago, 1-up, and
Miss Burns won 2 and 1 over
Mary Ann Reynolds, Albany,
Ga.

veteran golf professionals tak

lead today starting the second
round of the $30,000 Houston
Invitational golf tournament.
The six men, the youngest

Kroll from Fort Lauderdale.

Microwave Relay
Channel Completed
Portland (IP) Pacific Tele
phone and Telegraph today
announced completion of a
second channel in its Portland-Spokane
microwave re
lay system.
The expanded system Is ca
pable of handling 600 simul
taneous long distance tele
phone conversations and is
part of a $2,300,000 expan
sion program by PT&T.
Later this year - the firm
plans addition of a second
long distance channel on the
Portland-Seattle radio relay
and the addition of the first
telephone channel between
Portland and Sacramento
which now has only a televi
sion system.

Holloway said a new micro
wave system would also be
placed in service between
Medford and Klamath Falls
and a similar system between
Portland and Pendleton is
now nearing completion.
Baker-Homestead
Highway Closed
Salem (IP) The Baker
Homestead highway remained
closed in the Robinette area
today due to high water.
Mountain passes were clear
of snow but icy spots were
reported at Chemult and
Meacham.
There was ground fog at
Wilson river summit, Salem,
Salmon river, Roseburg,
Grants Pass, Cave Junction,
Chemult, Meacham, Klamath
Falls and Ontario.
Hermiston Publisher
To Seek Senate Post
Pendleton (IP) Dan C.
Bartlett, publisher of the
Hermiston Herald since 1942,
said today he will file for the
Democratic ' nomination for
slate senator from Umatilla
county. He has been a news
man in Nebraska, Idaho and
Oregon for 35 years.

Three Arrested for
Arson at Dallas
Dallas, Ore. HP) Three
young persons were arrested
Thursday on second - degree
arson charges involving burn
ing of unoccupied farm
houses in Polk county.
A fourth person was being
sought.
In Polk county jail were
Charley Frederick Buchanan,
18, Falls City; and George
Rex Starkweather, 20, Cor
vailis. The third person is a
16-year-old Falls City girl.
The arrests climaxed a
three-week investigation in
volving the State Police arson
squad, Polk County Sheriff
Tony Neufeldt and Falls City
Police Chief Harold Stevens.
Police said the youths were
accused of starting fires that
destroyed a house on the
Richard Orsboin farm Feb.
11 and the David Entz house
Feb. 14. They also are ac
cused of trying to burn a
house known as the Old Fern
place on Feb. 11. None of the
houses was occupied.

Navy Plane Lost -On
Atlantic Patrol
London (IP) A 30-plane air
armada from three continents
searched the stormy Atlantic
today for a U.S. Navy plane"
a flying radar station
missing on a regular patrol
with 23 and perhaps 25 men,
aboard.
The four-engine Super Con
stellation, fitted with long-"
range radar equipment, ap--'
parently crashed or ditched
on a round -trip patrol be

miles apart and searchers said
there was no hint 'where the ,
plane might have gone down.
Weathermen of the British
Air Ministry said conditions',
