shops, city nail officials said.

the visiting masters were
escorted to the master's sta
tion. Larry Perry, ways and
means committee, announced
that he has hopes of securing
a dance orchestra to play at
a Saturday night party.
The worthy master urged
all that have received a ballot
to vote on the proposed beef
commisison to do so.
Charley Hoover announced
that "Parade of the Century"
will be held on March 21, in
the afternoon. In the evening
there will be an old time
candidate rally at Eagle Point.
He has sent invitations to
many people.
Lecturer Betty Bradshaw
had a short program which
consisted of a Valentine story
by Mrs. Pearl Bartling. Claus
Charley gave an inspiriting
recitation of Lincoln's "Gettys
burg Address."
Master C. Johnson gave an
informative talk on the cor
rect manner in training cows
to help the farmer to shorten
his many tasks for the milk
ing time. AH the masters were
entertaining in telling of
many jokes. Some of the mas
ters have gained quite a repu
tation for their ability.
The birthdays of Ernest
Hostutler and Ernest Burrell
were honored by cakes and
gifts.
Shady Cove Grange
The regular potluck supper
of the month was held Satur
day eve, Feb. 15, at the Shady
Cove cafeteria.
Cecil Kee, a member of the
Shady Cove school board,
gave a talk on consolidation
and re-organization of school
districts with facts and
figures.
Next Grange meeting will
be March 1, with Mr. and
Mrs. C. Kee and Mr. and Mrs.
R. Deister serving.

probably the world's rainiest
spot, the National Geographic
Magazine says. Waialeale s an
nual rainfall averages 489
inches. In a recent year, 624
inches poured down. Strange
ly, only 20 inches a year fall
on Waimea, a coastal town

of my patients, with a bad
asthma, gave me the clue
when she said she never
wheezed except when she
slept in her own bed. Her
physician found out for me
that her room was full of
canaries, and then we found
that she was very sensitive to
these birds.
I remembered well a farm
er who we found got his
asthma only when he went
into town by a certain road
that went through a swamp.
He was very sensitive to
swamp alder. I remember a
cabinet-maker who got asthma
only on days when he polish
ed a certain type of wood.
and I remember a number of
asthmatics who had t o
choose between asthma and
giving up their job in a fac
tory where some special dust
made them ill. I
To help asthmatics in doing
their own detective work to
find out why, occasionally,
they are free and at other
times are all stuffed-up, I
wrote a booklet. It is one of
a group I have written for the
help of patients. Anyone who
wants the list can write me
including a stamped, address
ed envelope I am sorry I
canont give them away, but
most of them cost less than
75 cents.
Spells Follow Strain
Many persons with asthma,
when they keep a record, may
find that many of the spells
follow emotional strain. I
have read that one in two of
the children who go to the
fine hospital for asthmatic
children in Denver, stop
wheezing the day they leave
their home where, perhaps,
the parents were fighting or
talking about divorce, or be
ing too fearful and solicitous
about the child.
Many asthmatics ask me
if they should go to the dry
Southwest, but I cannot say.
A wise allergist could prob
ably advise them.
Many asthmatics ask me
die age are suffering from
conditions hard to cure, such
as emphysema ( disease that
causes a great loss in ef
ficiency, in the lung) or they
are having trouble with a bad
heart. Many are smoking
much too much and can
choose between wheezing ,and
smoking three packs a day.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his
readers will understand that
it would be impossible for
him to answer requests for in
formation or to attempt to
diagnose by mail.

Slated in March
An advanced training
school for police officers in
southern Oregon will be held
in Medford during March, ac
cording to Charles P. Champ
lin, Medford police chief.
He said about 50 officers
from state, county and city
are expected to attend. The
sessions are scheduled during
the afternoons of March 5,
10, 12, 17, 19 and 24.
Class subjects will be pub
lic relations, conduct of of
ficers, new crime reporting
forms, the officer in court,
interviewing juveniles and
traffic enforcement. . Instruct
ors for the classes will be
members of the state police,
Federal Bureau of Investiga
tion and local officials,
Champlin said.
The classes are sponsored
by the Oregon Association of
City Police and Oregon State
Sheriffs association. The Med
ford sessions will be for law
enforcement officials of Jack
son and Josephine counties
and will be held in the Med
ford council chambers.
