to estrange himself from his
father.
Roger S. We have nothing
in common.
Mrs. M. S. I was a widow
until last year when I mar
ried a widower with one
grown son. This boy, Roger,
had lived with his father un
til two years ago when he
went away to college.
Roger is the apple of my
husband's eye and I was pre
pared to treat him as a son
of my own. Unfortunately,
however, he doesn't seem to
like me. This doesn't bother
me as much as the fact that
he seems to be trying to es
trange himself from his fath
er. Roger didn't come home for
his past two vacations. He
went visiting friends of his
in another city. His father was
heartbroken. He doesn't write
often in spite of the fact that
his father writes twice a
week. I want to help bring
them closer together.
Roger S. I have tried to
reassure my stepmother that
this thing has nothing to do
with her and that I bear her
no grudge. I don't think she
should have injected herself
into the situation that exists
between my father and me.
Actually, I have known for
a long time that my father
and I have nothing in com
mon. When I was younger we
had a common interest in
sports. This no longer inter
ests me in the slightest. My
father's talk bores me to
death.
, My father has tried to show
an interest in my books and
studies, but his atteempts are
pathetic. He doesn't really
care about these things. My
stepmother's interests are the
same as his. He doesn't need
me and shouldn't be lone
some any more.
The Council: There is little
Mrs. M. S. can do to alleviate
this painful situation outside
of showing her goodwill to
ward Roger and her desire to
make him feel at home when
he does visit.
Rogers seems to be going
through a stage in which he
is trying to establish a new
and higher identity for him
self. His hold on this identity
is so feeble that he is using
rather violent methods to cut
himself off from his old self
the self that enjoyed sports
and contact with his father.
Roger should recognize that
his attitude is extremely im
mature. The statement that he
and his father have "nothing
in common" is laughable. If
nothing else, they have in
common a thousand memories
based on daily life under the
same roof.
Roger's sudden disdain of
sports is equally foolish. It is
possible for him to lose the
great enthusiasm for them
he probably had in his teen
years, but it is most unlikely
that he has really so complete
ly lost interest he cannot en
dure any talk at all on this
subject, This smacks of-pretense
and affection.
Roger does indicate he has
some feeling that his step
mother has taken his place
in his father's life. If he looks
the facts squarely in the face,
he will recognize the absurdi
ty of this notion. Roger
should level with himself and
face the fact that his current
attitudes are way off the
beam. He would probably
find it helpful to discuss some
of these things with a school
psychologist, if one is avail

age. There is one thing good
about it and that is that it
doesn't deform the joints; it
rarely cripples the person,

anything serious. I have had it
all my life and none of my
joints are deformed or stiff.
I have had dozens of attacks
in which, for a few days or
several weeks or months,
some of my joints were sore
and stiff. I never did anything
about this and so far the pain
and stiffness have gone away
after a while.
Unfortunately, we physici
ans don't know what the basic
cause of the disease is. I su
spect it is due to some dis
turbance in the body chem
istry. I have known a good
many persons with fibrositis
who had relatives with a seri
ous form of arthritis. People
with fibrositis are, I think to

called neuritis or myositis.
Neuritis is supposed to be due
to inflammation of a nerve
and myositis to inflammation
of a muscle, but usually about
all I can say to a patient is
that his pain is probably due
either to fibrositis or some
form of arthritis that affects
tissues around his joints. Peo
ple with fibrositis often have
pain in the chest wall that
makes them think they have
heart disease. I will find that
one or two of their ribs and
perhaps the muscles between
the ribs, are sore to the touch
or sensitive to pressure. Often
the woman who thinks she
has a cancer of the breast has
only a sore sport on one of
the ribs under one of her
breasts.
Painful Arthritis
Many a time I have had a
man come in with such sore
ness in the pit of his stomach
that he was sure he had an
ulcer. But in a moment I
could show him that all he
had was a painful arthritis in
the little joint at the lower
end of the breast-bone where
it joins onto a little tip. Some
people with fibrositis get pain
in the cartilages that connect
their ribs on each side to the
breast-bone, or they get pain
in the little joints at the ends
of the 10th ribs on each side
in front.
When one is suffering from
fibrositis, about as good treat
ment as any is to take two
aspirins every little while to
relieve pain and then to get
into a tub of hot water before
going to bed. Massage and
manipulation may help.
Whenever, in my life, I
have waked in the morning
with a painful and stiff hip
joint or ankle-joint, I have
walked to work, and by the
time I had gone about five
blocks, I was free of pain for
the rest of the day. As my old
friend, Dr. Philip Hench, says,
the person who has guts
enough to keep moving his
joints gets well, while the
sissy who won't stand pain
may get a stiff shoulder.
Many people ask, Should I
go to a warm dry climate in
order to get rid of my fibrosi
tis? And I say, "You had bet
ter not pull up stakes and go
to great expense to move, be
cause you may find that your
fibrositis is no better in Ari
zona than it was, in Minne
sota." 1
